A Wedding Eight Centuries Long
The Torta dei Fieschi is the grand historical festival of Lavagna, in the Tigullio area of the metropolitan city of Genoa. The event re-enacts the wedding celebrated in 1230 between Opizzo Fiesco, a member of the powerful Fieschi family of counts of Lavagna, and Bianca de' Bianchi. A wedding feast that popular tradition has transformed, for over seventy years, into one of the most beloved events of the Ligurian summer.
The Historical Procession
The heart of the re-enactment is the historical procession, with about 150 participants in medieval costume: the Sestieri of Lavagna, musicians, flag-wavers, and the Cavalieri del Fiesco parade through the streets of the town centre, recreating the atmosphere of the 13th century. A spectacular tribute to the intertwining of history and legend.
The Cake and the Game of Couples
The most anticipated moment is the cutting of the wedding cake, a creation weighing over ten quintals made by Lavagna's historic pastry shops and distributed free to all attendees. To receive a slice, you must participate in the famous game of couples: you buy a card, blue for men and pink for women, and whoever finds the person with the corresponding name card forms a couple and gets a slice. A game of encounters that animates Piazza Vittorio Veneto every year.
