A Year-End Tradition
The Torchlight Descent of the Ski Instructors of Champoluc is one of the most evocative events of the Aosta Valley winter. At the end of December, the instructors from the Ski School descend in a line along the Crest slope, each with a lit torch, illuminating the woods and mountain slopes with a trail of lights winding through the darkness. The spectacle concludes with a fireworks display that lights up the sky above Champoluc.
In the Heart of Monte Rosa
The event takes place in Champoluc, the main tourist resort of the Municipality of Ayas, in the Val d'Ayas, within the large Monterosa Ski area at the foot of the Monte Rosa massif. The descent takes place on the Crest slope, accessible by the Champoluc-Crest cable car.
Open to Skiers
The torchlight descent is not just a spectacle to admire from below: it is open to all skiers with an intermediate technical level, who can join the descent with torches by registering for free. The exclusive use of LED or head torches is required for safety reasons. A unique and participatory way to experience the magical atmosphere of the year-end on the snows of Monte Rosa.
Torchlight Descent of Champoluc — edition 2026
The 2026 edition of the Torchlight Descent of the Ski Instructors of Champoluc upholds the year-end tradition: the instructors from the Ski School descend in a line along the Crest slope with lit torches, illuminating the slopes of Monte Rosa, before the concluding fireworks display. The usual date is December 30th; official confirmation and timings will be published by the organizers closer to the event.
The descent is open to skiers with an intermediate technical level, upon free registration, with the mandatory use of LED or head torches.

How to get there
Champoluc is the main resort in Ayas, in the Val d'Ayas (A5 motorway exit Verrès, then SR45). The descent starts from the area served by the Champoluc-Crest cable car.
Participation
Registration for the descent is free (by the day before) and an intermediate ski level is required; only LED or head torches are permitted. The show is free for the public to watch.
