The painting of Leonardo Corneli transforms Tolentino into a widespread open-air museum
For a few weeks in April, Tolentino, an elegant town in the province of Macerata in the heart of the Marche region, transforms into a widespread open-air museum. The exhibition Tolentino, the territory of colors brings the painting of Leonardo Corneli not only to the prestigious foyer of the Politeama Franco Moschini but also among the shop windows and spaces of the historic center, intertwining art and daily life. It is a project that aims to make art accessible to everyone, allowing people to encounter it as they stroll through the city streets.
Corneli is a self-taught painter who began painting in 1974, after his father's death: he locked himself in his room and began to give form to his grief through color, far from any gaze. Since then, he has built a body of work that now exceeds two thousand pieces. His research places him in a personal abstract Impressionism, where light and color become the absolute protagonists and the canvases evoke vibrant, almost Parisian atmospheres. "Color does not exist out there," states the artist, "but it is a miracle that happens within us." Throughout his career, he has exhibited in various Italian cities, from Spoleto to Bologna, from Camerino to Rimini, and even Rome.
The exhibition presents the artist's most recent production: a sensory journey through real and imagined landscapes, chromatic vibrations, memories of the territory, and poetic flights. In addition to the Politeama foyer, the works are hosted in numerous city spaces — including Free Sport, L'Erbolario, Diva, Sugar, Letizia Vera, Bar Cappelletti, the herbalist's shop on Viale della Stazione, and L'Incanto Wedding — creating a path that invites you to rediscover Tolentino by following the thread of color.
Promoted by the Politeama Franco Moschini with the Municipality of Tolentino, the exhibition has free admission and is aimed at everyone: art enthusiasts, the curious, families, and passing visitors. It is an opportunity to discover the pictorial vein of a local artist and, at the same time, to experience the center of Tolentino with a new perspective, during one of the best seasons to visit the Marche hinterland.
The exhibition Tolentino, the territory of colors opened on Saturday, April 11th, 2026, at 6:00 PM in the foyer of the Politeama Franco Moschini, remaining open to the public until April 30th, 2026. On display are eighteen oil canvases by Leonardo Corneli, an expression of his abstract Impressionism made of light and color. In addition to the main venue, the artist's works animated various spaces in the city — Free Sport, L'Erbolario, Diva, Sugar, Letizia Vera, Bar Cappelletti, the herbalist's shop on Viale della Stazione, and L'Incanto Wedding — making Tolentino a true widespread museum.
