The historic carnival of Tiarno di Sopra in the Ledro Valley, featuring allegorical floats and local tradition
Within the landscape of Trentino-Alto Adige carnivals, the Tiarno Grand Carnival holds a special place. It takes place in Tiarno di Sopra, a village in the Municipality of Ledro, in the province of Trento, and represents one of the most anticipated and well-attended winter events in the Ledro basin. Reaching its 52nd edition in 2026, the carnival is organized with passion by the Pro Loco of Tiarno di Sopra and the Carnival Committee, who involve the entire community in the preparation of floats and costumes every year.
The centerpiece of the event is the parade of allegorical floats and masked groups, which winds through the village streets on Sunday afternoon. The floats, handmade in the preceding months by local groups and neighboring villages, mix imagination, color, and the typical satirical vein of the carnival, creating a festive procession that draws visitors from across the Ledro Valley and the nearby Garda Trentino area. The parade is surrounded by music, entertainment, and an unmistakable atmosphere of shared joy.
The Tiarno Grand Carnival spans two days. Saturday evening is dedicated to fun with masquerade parties, live music, and DJ sets, while Sunday is the main event. At noon, the community gathers for the free distribution of pasta with meat sauce, followed in the early afternoon by the float parade. Throughout the afternoon, there is no shortage of traditional delicacies like grostoi (carnival fritters) and mulled wine, while the evening features dancing with an orchestra, awards for the best floats, and a raffle draw.
More than just a party, the Tiarno Grand Carnival is an opportunity to rediscover the cultural roots of the area and strengthen community bonds. The voluntary involvement of families, associations, and young people in building the floats and organizing the event makes this carnival an authentic treasure of popular traditions in the Ledro Valley. Admission to all activities is free, in line with the open and convivial spirit of the event.
Attending the Tiarno Grand Carnival is also a chance to explore the Ledro Valley, an authentic corner of Trentino nestled between Lake Garda and the Brenta Dolomites. With its alpine lake, UNESCO-listed pile dwellings, and mountain villages, the valley offers visitors a natural and cultural setting of great charm, of which the Tiarno di Sopra carnival is one of the most genuine expressions.
The 2026 Tiarno Grand Carnival celebrated its 52nd edition over the weekend of February 14 and 15, organized by the Pro Loco and the Carnival Committee of Tiarno di Sopra. Saturday opened with the 9th Trisac Tournament in the afternoon, followed in the evening by the Campari Party and the "Masked Night – Disco Live," featuring music, entertainment, and a costume contest. Sunday saw the free distribution of pasta with meat sauce at noon, followed by the traditional parade of allegorical floats and masked groups, grostoi and mulled wine in the afternoon, and an evening dance with the Frank David orchestra, float awards, and the raffle draw.
