The Bear, the chains and the cowbells: the anthropological carnival of Teana
In Teana, a tiny village in the Pollino National Park in the Province of Potenza, carnival is one of the nine historic Lucanian carnivals, recognized as an anthropological heritage of the region. The protagonist is an ancestral figure: L'Urs, the Bear, a mask that embodies the wild and untamable nature of man and the forest.
L'Urs parades dressed in goatskin and bound in chains, led by guards and accompanied by the Carnuluvar (the Carnival) and other masks like the Miska. Its movements are marked by the din of cowbells and the munnol, the ritual staff. It is the representation of primordial chaos in the cycle of life and death: a rite of passage rooted in the agro-pastoral cultures of the Pollino, where the bear was both a threat and a symbol of nature's strength.
The festival is not just about masks: it includes the ritual dressing, the welcome in the square, the "Trial of Carnival" and the festival of "I Maccarun ca mllic", the typical pasta with breadcrumbs, accompanied by live music. All framed by cultural initiatives, such as the screen-printing aperitif dedicated to Southern Italian identity, and theatrical performances that conclude the celebrations.
The event is promoted by Pro Loco Teana APS with the patronage of the Basilicata Region and Basilicata Turistica. It is an entirely free festival, built by the community to pass down a unique intangible heritage and attract curious people, scholars, and folk tradition enthusiasts to the small Pollino village.
For 2026, the Teana carnival runs from January 31 to February 15, with the highlight on February 14. Organized by Pro Loco Teana APS, the event is free and benefits from the patronage of the Basilicata Region and Basilicata Turistica.
It starts on January 31 with the Kalura Meridionalismo screen-printing aperitif; February 14 is the main day, with the dressing of the masks, the welcome in the square, the Trial of Carnival, the gastronomic festival and the evening concert; February 15 concludes with the theatrical performance.
How to get there: Teana is located in Pollino, reachable from the SS 653 Sinnica with an internal detour, about 100 km from Potenza. The masks parade through the historic center and in Piazza Umberto I.
