Used and vintage clothing swaps for a freer, more sustainable fashion scene in the Testaccio district
The Swap Wave Project was born in Rome in July 2023 from an idea by a group of friends who wanted to experience fashion in a freer, more personal, and sustainable way. In just over two years, the project has grown into a true cultural and participatory format—much more than a simple market: at every event, people swap clothes, but also ideas, art, music, and emotions. The message is clear and directed at the fashion industry, one of the most polluting in the world: give new life to garments instead of buying new ones.
The principle is simple: "bring yours, take what you like." All items have the same value, regardless of brand or price. You arrive with a number of clean, good-condition items, receive tokens in exchange, and choose freely from everything others have brought. There are no sales and no money: only swapping. It is an ecological and social gesture that extends the life cycle of clothing and reduces waste, promoting a circular fashion model accessible to everyone.
The regular swap events in Rome are held in the Testaccio district, within the spaces of the Città dell'Altra Economia in Largo Dino Frisullo, under the auspices of Rome Capital and the Lazio Region. Here, the "Nei Tuoi Panni" series, organized by the associations Inspire, Tao, and MDF — Movimento per la Decrescita Felice, hosts several swap party afternoons throughout the year. In exchange for a symbolic donation, participants bring clothing, shoes, and accessories to swap with others; the proceeds from the donations support the non-profit projects of the involved associations.
What makes The Swap Wave Project special is its multidisciplinary nature. Around the swap tables, exhibitions by independent artists, live painting and body art sessions, custom tailoring, creative workshops, and live DJ sets come to life. The format is itinerant, touching popular neighborhoods, local venues, rooftops, and city festivals: every location becomes an opportunity to build something new together with a community that grows with every event.
The choice of Testaccio is no coincidence. Historically linked to the old slaughterhouse and the Campo Boario, the district now hosts the Città dell'Altra Economia, a space dedicated to critical consumption, fair trade, and sustainable practices. It is the ideal setting for a project about reuse, sharing, and environmental responsibility, located in one of Rome's most authentic and vibrant areas, just a stone's throw from the Monte dei Cocci and the neighborhood's local hotspots.
Participating in a swap party means refreshing your wardrobe for little to no cost, discovering unique vintage pieces, and reducing your environmental impact. Above all, it is a moment of connection: you chat, listen to music, discover the art of young creatives, and find yourself in a community that chooses a different way to consume. From 2026, the project also opened up to the little ones, with swaps designed for children's clothing, confirming the inclusive and family-friendly soul of this small but mighty Roman wave.
2026 brought a calendar full of swap parties to Rome. At the Città dell'Altra Economia in the Testaccio district, the "Nei Tuoi Panni" events took place on January 16, March 6, May 8, and May 29, from 6:00 PM to 9:30 PM, organized by the associations Inspire, Tao, and MDF — Movimento per la Decrescita Felice. With a minimum donation of one euro per item, participants were able to bring up to 15 garments, 2 pairs of shoes, and various accessories, swapping them freely with others.
Alongside the regular events, The Swap Wave Project continued its itinerant journey through the city's neighborhoods, venues, and cultural spaces, combining clothing swaps with art, live music, and workshops. One of the highlights of 2026 was the inclusion of children's items, making the events even more family-oriented.
Each evening required a minimum donation of one euro per item brought, supporting the non-profit projects of the organizing associations.

Metro line B, Piramide stop, a few minutes' walk away; Roma Ostiense station and Piramide station (Roma-Lido) are nearby. Numerous bus and tram lines serve Testaccio. Due to the limited traffic zone and lack of parking, public transport is highly recommended.
