The international folklore festival across Taormina, Acireale, and Letojanni
The Sicily International Folk Festival is a traveling event dedicated to folk music and dance that traverses some of the most picturesque towns on the Sicilian Ionian coast every May. Organized by the APS MediterraneArtè association in collaboration with EuroArt Production Italia and supported by the Regional Department of Cultural Heritage and Sicilian Identity, the event brings together folk groups from various European countries and Italian regions, offering the public a journey through traditions, costumes, and sounds from across the globe.
The inaugural stage takes place in Taormina, in the Metropolitan City of Messina, along the famous Corso Umberto I, the pedestrian artery that runs through the historic center of the so-called Pearl of the Ionian. Here, the groups bring to life a colorful parade and a series of performances in the squares and open spaces along the course: live music, traditional dances, and authentic attire animate the town in the late afternoon, offering residents and tourists a free open-air show in one of Sicily's most beloved locations.
After Taormina, the event continues over the following days to two other towns in the provinces of Catania and Messina: Acireale, with its Baroque scenery and grand finale in Piazza Duomo, and Letojanni, where all groups gather for the final performance in Piazza Cagli. This itinerant nature is a hallmark of the festival, bringing international folklore into direct contact with Sicily's historical and architectural heritage.
The festival has a strong international vocation: past editions have featured ensembles from countries such as Serbia, Switzerland, Germany, Lithuania, Estonia, Malta, and Austria, alongside Italian groups from the Aosta Valley, Sardinia, and Sicily. The goal is to promote dialogue between folk cultures through the universal language of music and dance, while showcasing the traditions of the Sicilian territory.
The fourth edition of The Sicily International Folk Festival was held from May 22 to 24, 2026, bringing together eleven groups of folk music and dance. For the first time, a group from the United States was present, alongside groups from Serbia, Switzerland, and Germany, as well as Italian formations from the Aosta Valley, Sardinia, and Sicily.
The program followed the usual itinerant route: Friday, May 22 in Taormina, with a parade and performances along Corso Umberto I from 6:00 PM; Saturday, May 23 in Acireale, with performances in the Baroque historic center and a conclusion in Piazza Duomo; Sunday, May 24 in Letojanni, with the grand finale in Piazza Cagli that brought all participating groups together.
Taormina is accessible by train (Taormina-Giardini station, on the Messina-Catania line) and by car via the A18 Messina-Catania motorway, Taormina exit. From the station and the parking lots at the foot of the hill, you can reach the center by shuttle bus or cable car. The nearest airport is Catania-Fontanarossa.
Performances along Corso Umberto I and in the squares are free of charge.
Taormina's historic center is pedestrianized: it is recommended to leave your car in the parking lots at the bottom of the town. Tourist traffic is high in spring, so it is best to book your accommodation in advance.
