The summer solstice in the village of the Prince of Musicians, amidst soft lighting, music, and the flavors of Irpinia
When the summer solstice arrives and the days reach their peak length, Gesualdo takes part in the Romantic Night in the Most Beautiful Villages of Italy, a national event promoted by the 'I Borghi piรน belli d'Italia' association, dedicated to love, beauty, and sharing. For one evening, the historic center of this town in the province of Avellino, Campania, transforms into a path of soft lights, live music, and fragrances, with the Castle dominating the Fredane valley like a natural theatrical set.
The village owes its fame to Carlo Gesualdo, Prince of Venosa and one of the most daring madrigalists of the late Renaissance, remembered as the 'Prince of Musicians'. It is no coincidence, then, that music is the common thread of the evening: live performances, choreography, and shows accompany visitors along the alleys, from the squares to the historic rooms of the manor.
Romantic settings are staged throughout the ancient core, which becomes one large, widespread stage. The locations that mark the evening are now recognizable year after year:
The pace is intentionally slow: you walk, stop in front of a flower-decked balcony, listen to a song, and taste something. It is a formula that makes the event suitable for families with children, who find an extra reason for curiosity in the castle and its legends.
The program alternates between moments of entertainment and scenic crossings. Choreography and flash mobs are entrusted to the students of the local dance school ASD Carlo Gesualdo, while street theater brings costumed figures and itinerant storytelling to the alleys: in the 2026 edition, the most anticipated moment was the Baracca dei Buffoni show, which started from the Castle and reached Piazza Neviera. The picture is completed by a photography exhibition, art displays, and guided tours led by cultural volunteers.
One of the most characteristic initiatives is the 'Romantic Balcony' contest, launched by the Voci dal Borgo association: the citizens themselves decorate balconies, windows, and corners of the historic center with flowers, drapes, and candles. The result is a village that dresses itself up from the bottom up, giving visitors the image of a community that participates rather than just hosting.
Food and wine are an integral part of the evening: food stands distributed along the route offer tastings and street food featuring the excellence of the Irpinia territory, one of the most renowned areas of inland Campania, a land of DOC wines and rustic cuisine.
Since 2026, the Romantic Night of Gesualdo has extended over two days thanks to the Trunk Fair, an itinerant market where you buy directly from the trunks of cars: collectibles, antiques, embroidery, and handicrafts, in a format that combines reuse, creativity, and social interaction. The formula has allowed the event, which was born as a single evening, to transform into a complete weekend, with Saturday dedicated to the market and Sunday to the artistic program.
The Romantic Night is celebrated on the same night in all the villages certified by the national association, each with its own program. Gesualdo is among the centers that best interpret its spirit in Campania: a compact village, dominated by the castle, where the urban scale allows you to experience the event without excessive crowds. The organization is entrusted to the Municipality of Gesualdo together with the cultural association Voci dal Borgo.
The 2026 edition โ the second for Gesualdo โ took place on Saturday, June 20, and Sunday, June 21, expanding for the first time the single-evening formula to an entire weekend. The Municipality of Gesualdo and the cultural association Voci dal Borgo built a widespread program featuring attractions, panoramic points, food stands, encounters with local history and culture, walks in the citadel, a photography exhibition, choreography, dancing, theater, and astronomical observation.
The novelty of the year was the Trunk Fair, a market where you buy directly from the trunks of cars, featuring collectibles, antiques, embroidery, and handicrafts: a brand-new format for the village, designed to combine reuse, creativity, and social interaction. Romantic settings covered the entire historic center, with installations at Palazzo Mattioli and Palazzo Pisapia, the astronomical point on the Terrazza Mattioli, and the space dedicated to music and dance in Piazza Umberto I.
On Sunday, June 21, the most popular moment was the itinerant show Baracca dei Buffoni, which departed at 6:00 PM from the Castle and arrived in Piazza Neviera. There was also the 'Romantic Balcony' contest, with citizens busy decorating balconies and corners of the town, as well as the flash mob by the ASD Carlo Gesualdo dance school.
Program reconstructed from communications by the Municipality of Gesualdo, the Voci dal Borgo association, and local Irpinian press. Some times may have changed during the event.
Gesualdo is located in central Irpinia, about thirty kilometers from Avellino. By car, the most convenient exit is Grottaminarda on the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, from which you continue for a few kilometers on provincial roads. There is no direct rail connection to the village: the reference stations are Avellino and Benevento, from which you must continue by bus or car. The nearest airports are Naples-Capodichino and Bari-Palese.
The historic center is compact and partially pedestrianized during the event: it is best to leave your car in the parking areas at the edge of the village and walk up towards the Castle. The main route is easy to walk, but it has inclines and stone paving.
Admission to the event is free and open to all. In past editions, access to the Castle was also free, with guided tours provided by cultural volunteers. Only food at the stands and purchases at the Trunk Fair are paid.
Gesualdo has a few small accommodation facilities (bed and breakfasts and guest houses); for a wider choice, you can stay in Grottaminarda, Mirabella Eclano, or Avellino, all a short drive away.
