Two evenings of taste, tradition, and culture in the historic center of Maruggio

The Road of Knowledge and Flavors is the signature event of the summer in Maruggio, a village in the province of Taranto overlooking the Ionian coast of Salento. For two consecutive evenings in August, the alleys and squares of the historic center come alive with food stalls, book presentations, and folk music, creating a path that weaves together food, wine, culture, and local traditions. The event, which reached its twenty-first edition in 2025, is organized by the Pro Loco of Maruggio with the patronage of the Municipality as part of the city's summer calendar.
The common thread of the festival is local food. Along the food and wine route, visitors can taste typical dishes of Salento and Taranto cuisine, prepared with zero-kilometer ingredients: from pizzarieddi to pettole, traditional meatballs, local cheeses and cured meats, and seasonal fruit, all accompanied by local wines and beers. The stalls, managed by producers and volunteers, typically open in the early evening and remain active throughout the event.
The Road of Knowledge and Flavors stands out for its focus on culture. Every evening, in Piazza del Popolo, there are literary presentations featuring local and visiting authors, sharing stories dedicated to memory, food, family, and emotions. The meetings are accompanied by musical interludes and conclude with the rhythms of Salento pizzica, the heart of the region's folk tradition, featuring folk groups and local artists.
More than just a food festival, the event has become a symbol of identity and social connection for the community of Maruggio and the many tourists who flock to the Ionian coast in August. The formula combines the promotion of local products, the encouragement of reading, and the rediscovery of folk music, offering visitors an authentic immersion into the soul of the Salento area. Admission is free, and the atmosphere, amidst the white walls and courtyards of the historic center, is that of a convivial Apulian village feast.
The Road of Knowledge and Flavors returns to Maruggio in 2026, in the Salento area of Taranto, as a highlight of the summer calendar curated by the Pro Loco. Official dates and the program for the 2026 edition have not yet been communicated: based on previous editions, the event is expected in the second half of August, with the usual food and wine route through the alleys of the historic center, literary presentations in Piazza del Popolo, and Salento pizzica concerts. The detailed program will be published by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event.
