The Medici village of Cerreto Guidi lights up with nativity scenes between Christmas and Epiphany
From the Immaculate Conception to Epiphany, the village of Cerreto Guidi, nestled in the heart of the Montalbano area near Florence, dresses up for the holidays with The Nativity Trail. The event turns the historic center of this Medici town into a widespread exhibition where every nook, cranny, door, or window hosts a nativity scene: over two hundred cribs of all kinds, from classic pieces crafted by historic artisans to original creations, including those set up by local adults and children.
The symbolic heart of the exhibition is the renowned Crochet Nativity, crafted by Gessica Mancini together with the 'Dame dell'Uncinetto' (Crochet Ladies). The work began in 2013 as a therapeutic and creative response to the artist's Parkinson's diagnosis, and over the years, it has become one of the largest wool-based nativity scenes in Italy, serving as the true centerpiece of the entire Cerreto trail.
Along the route, visitors can admire works of great craftsmanship: the wooden nativity by Fabio Bandini, the pieces by Danilo Ancillotti, the dioramas by Sandro Nardini, and the creations by Antonio Pigozzi, Nicolรฒ Celegato, and Franco Pucci. Alongside these masters, there is space for nativity scenes from schools, families, and children, making the event a true community project.
During the weekends, the village comes alive with events and activities for all ages: Christmas concerts, guided tours, creative and embroidery workshops, entertainment for children, and festive moments in the squares. Among the most anticipated events is Cerreto Ciok, the artisanal chocolate market that fills the central squares around Epiphany, and the historical re-enactment of the arrival of the Three Wise Men and the Befana on January 6th. The event concludes with the awards ceremony for the most beautiful nativity scenes.
Organized by the Pro Loco Cerreto Guidi in collaboration with the Municipality of Cerreto Guidi, The Nativity Trail is a beloved, free winter event that combines the tradition of the nativity scene with the discovery of a historic village linked to the Medici family and the figure of Isabella de' Medici. A slow stroll through folk art, Christmas atmosphere, and village hospitality, just a few kilometers from Empoli, Vinci, and Florence.
The fourteenth edition took place from December 6, 2025, to January 18, 2026, in the historic center of Cerreto Guidi. The inauguration, on Sunday, December 7, saw the lighting of the nativity scenes in the presence of Monsignor Giovanni Paccosi, Bishop of San Miniato, accompanied by shows and entertainment in the village.
The Crochet Nativity was open to visitors on weekends and public holidays (10:00 AM-12:30 PM and 3:00 PM-7:00 PM), with free admission. Organized by the Pro Loco Cerreto Guidi and the Municipality of Cerreto Guidi.
Cerreto Guidi can be reached by car from the FI-PI-LI highway (Empoli exits) and is about 40 km from Florence. The nearest train station is Empoli, on the Florence-Pisa line, from where you can continue by bus or taxi.
Admission to the nativity trail is free. The Crochet Nativity can be visited on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM and from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Guided tours and excursions require booking.
