Every year, between December 8th and Epiphany, the town of Maenza — a small center in the Lepini Mountains in the province of Latina, Lazio — becomes one of the most recognizable Christmas destinations in lower Lazio. The Magical Christmas in the Village of Maenza is not just a single event but a collection of initiatives involving the Pro Loco, the Municipality, local associations, and residents of the historic center, who open their cellars and storage rooms to welcome visitors.
The starting signal is the large luminous comet star, about thirty meters high, installed at the Belvedere and visible from the entire valley: when it lights up, along with the illuminations in Piazza Lepri and the tree in Piazza La Portella, Christmas in Maenza has officially begun.
The Nativity Scene Trail, the heart of the event
The nativity tradition in Maenza began in the late nineties and has continued ever since. The "Maenza tra Presepi, Tradizioni e..." association sets up an itinerary along the town's streets that has exceeded a hundred scenes in some editions: ranging from the simplest nativity to the most elaborate dioramas, set in stone niches, under the merchants' loggia, and in private cellars that residents open for the occasion.
It is a walk to be taken on foot, without haste, climbing up and down the alleys of the medieval village: the scenery is not built, it is the village itself. The trail remains open throughout the Christmas period, until the Sunday that closes the calendar.
The program: music, taste, and re-enactment
A packed calendar revolves around the nativity scenes. On the weekends of December, the Santa Claus Village opens in Piazza La Portella, with entertainment for children, while the Baronial Castle — the town's iconic monument, which hosted Saint Thomas Aquinas — hosts Castello diVino, a food and wine exhibition with tastings, DJ sets, and live music.

The gastronomic component is anything but secondary. The cellars and refreshment points in the village offer products from the Lepini area — extra virgin olive oil, cheeses, cured meats, wines from the Pontine territory — and the event concludes with the Polenta and Crespelle Festival, served in the square on the final day: a simple, convivial dish that brings the town together before the lights are taken down.
Why it's worth the trip
Maenza offers what large Christmas markets cannot: a cozy, authentic atmosphere, where the person setting up the nativity scene is the same one opening their front door to you. Less than an hour from Latina and just over an hour from Rome, the village allows you to combine your Christmas visit with the discovery of the Baronial Castle, the medieval center, and the trails of the Lepini Mountains. It is one of the most well-curated offerings in the winter calendar of the Lazio Region and the Compagnia dei Lepini area.

A calendar of over a month
The 2025-2026 edition started on Monday, December 8th, with the arrival of Santa's sleigh in the afternoon, the lighting of the large comet star at the Belvedere, the illuminations in Piazza Lepri, and the tree in Piazza La Portella, along with the inauguration of the Nativity Scene Trail curated by the "Maenza tra Presepi, Tradizioni e..." association.
On the weekends of December 13-14 and 20-21, the village hosted the Santa Claus Village in Piazza La Portella, while the Castello diVino event was held at the Baronial Castle, featuring tastings, a food and wine exhibition, DJ sets, and live music. On Monday, December 22nd, the Castle hosted the Gospel Concert by the Phoenix Gospel Choir.
The busiest day was Sunday, December 28th: a Poetic Walk in the alleys with a morning show, the "Running among the Nativity Scenes" urban trail in the afternoon, and the Historical Re-enactment of the Nativity to follow. The calendar then continued with "Fairy Tale Christmas — Sand Tales" on the 29th, the presentation of "Hats Off — When Sport Becomes Fair Play" on the 30th, and the New Year's Eve Happy Hour in the square on December 31st.
In January, the escape room at the Castle and the Befana party accompanied visitors until the final Sunday on January 11, 2026, with the Polenta and Crespelle festival in the square and the last day of the Nativity Scene Trail.

How to get there
By car: from Rome, take the A1 motorway to Colleferro or via the SS Casilina, then follow signs for Montelanico-Carpineto Romano-Maenza; from Latina, take the SS Appia to Priverno and then drive up towards Maenza (about 40 minutes). The historic center is pedestrianized during events: park in the designated areas at the foot of the village, using shuttles or short uphill walks.
By train
Priverno-Fossanova station on the Rome-Naples line via Formia, then take a bus or taxi to Maenza (about 12 km).
Admission and costs
Visiting the Nativity Scene Trail and the village illuminations is free. Some initiatives — tastings at the Castle, escape rooms, urban trail registration, food festivals — require a contribution or participation fee to be verified with the organizers.
Tips
Wear comfortable, non-slip shoes: the path is on sloping cobblestones. Evenings in the Lepini area are cold and windy, so heavy clothing is recommended. The weekends of the Immaculate Conception and before Christmas are the most crowded; for a quiet visit to the nativity scenes, it is better to choose a weekday.
