The festival revealing the hidden treasures of the Sicilian capital
The Genius of Palermo is the spring festival organized by the Le Vie dei Tesori Foundation in collaboration with the University of Palermo, the Superintendency, and the Municipality of Palermo. For a long weekend, the Sicilian capital opens the doors to historic palaces, noble villas, churches, crypts, gardens, and artisan workshops that are normally closed to the public, transforming the entire historic center into a vast, walkable open-air museum.
The festival takes its name from the Genius of Palermo, the city's ancient secular guardian deity: a crowned old man clutching a snake, a symbol of hospitality and wisdom, venerated long before the cult of Saint Rosalia. Represented in numerous effigies scattered throughout the city, including the famous Genius of the Garraffo and the one at Palazzo Pretorio, the Genius embodies the deepest and most secret identity of Palermo: "Panormus conca aurea suos devorat alienos nutrit," reads the motto that accompanies him.
The program brings together dozens of visitable sites, special experiences, and themed walks that weave together art, archaeology, esotericism, and popular traditions. Recurring festival offerings include:
Born from the successful format of Le Vie dei Tesori, The Genius of Palermo has attracted thousands of visitors in just a few editions, becoming a highly anticipated event in the city's spring calendar. The collaboration with the University of Palermo ensures a scientific and educational approach, with narrators and students accompanying the public to discover the city's heritage. The festival highlights not only major monuments but also the lesser-known corners of the Municipality of Palermo, returning a layered, multicultural city full of surprises to both citizens and tourists in the heart of Sicily.
Access to sites is managed via multi-entry coupons, which can be purchased online or at the Foundation's headquarters. Booking is not mandatory but is strongly recommended to secure visits to the most popular sites at your preferred time.
The fifth edition of the festival was held from April 16 to 19, 2026, organized as a long weekend of tours, walks, and experiences. The program featured about twenty monuments, gardens, and unusual sites, accompanied by thirty special experiences and numerous themed walks dedicated to the city's mysteries and traditions.
Among the most anticipated novelties was the first-time opening of Casa Savona, a refined interior decorated by Gino Morici, and exceptional access to Porta Mazara, with its frescoes that are normally not open to the public. There was also a focus on The Paths of Commerce, a section dedicated to artisan workshops and the studios of Palermo's master craftsmen, from silversmiths to contemporary designers.
Festival spread over a long weekend (April 16-19, 2026) with three types of offerings:
