A month of lights, markets, and magic in the historic center of Pontecorvo
The Christmas of Little Wishes is the grand holiday event of the Municipality of Pontecorvo, a town in the province of Frosinone, in southern Lazio. Though only a few years old, the festival has already established a clear identity: not a single event concentrated over a weekend, but a widespread calendar that accompanies the city from the first days of December until Epiphany, with the historic center transformed into a true Christmas village.
The title perfectly captures the spirit of the event: the little wishes are those of the children, the primary audience for workshops, shows, and activities, but the program is designed so that adults can also find their space among tastings, concerts, and walks beneath the holiday lights.
The heart of the event is the urban fabric of Pontecorvo: Piazza Annunziata, Piazza Cattedrale, and the main street host wooden huts, food stands, and light installations. The lighting of the main tree in Piazza Annunziata is the symbolic moment that officially opens the festivities, accompanied by tastings and circus performances.
In the following weeks, the town experiences a long, continuous celebration: bagpipers roam the streets with the traditional melodies of the Ciociaria Christmas, costumed groups parade through the center, and Santa Claus villages set up in the squares welcome families in the late afternoon.
Pontecorvo is a city accustomed to major popular events: the Historic Carnival of Pontecorvo, one of the oldest in Lazio, and the Pontecorvo Pepper Festival (DOP) have marked the city calendar for decades. The Christmas of Little Wishes fits into this tradition of widespread and participatory events, bringing the same communal spirit to winter: local associations, downtown merchants, and schools all collaborate on the setup and entertainment.
For those visiting Ciociaria during the holidays, Pontecorvo offers the most authentic alternative to large commercial Christmas villages: intimate scale, fewer crowds, and direct contact with artisans and local cuisine. The village, perched on the Civita hill and overlooking the Liri Valley, adds a natural backdrop to the event that the lights enhance even further.
The event is clearly aimed at families with children: the main events are scheduled for the afternoon and early evening, the areas are pedestrianized, and almost all activities are free. However, the long duration of the program, covering over a month, also allows those simply looking for a Christmas stroll with a good glass of wine and some local bites to find their opportunity, especially on the weekends of December.
The 2025-2026 edition of the Christmas of Little Wishes was the third for the event and spanned over a month of programming, from December 4, 2025 to January 6, 2026. The Municipality of Pontecorvo set up the historic center as a widespread Christmas village, with lights, wooden huts, and spaces dedicated to children.
The calendar alternated between square events and more intimate moments: the opening of the stands, the lighting of the main tree, the Christmas concert in the Co-Cathedral, the costumed run in late December, and the closing with the Befana at Epiphany. The streets of the center were traversed by bagpipers and groups of costumed artists, according to a Ciociaria tradition that is still very much alive.
The free formula and long duration allowed for constant participation, including from neighboring towns in the province of Frosinone.
Throughout the period: Santa Claus villages, craft market, roving bagpipers, and costumed artists in the streets of the center.
By car: from the A1 Rome-Naples motorway, take the Pontecorvo exit, then follow signs for the center. By train: Cassino or Roccasecca station on the Rome-Naples line via Cassino, then take a bus connection. The historic center is pedestrianized during events: it is advisable to use external parking lots.
Access to the Christmas village and almost all events is free. Events are concentrated in the afternoon and early evening, with greater intensity on weekends and during the holidays.
