Great drama in the heart of Ortigia, from November to May
The Teatro Massimo City of Syracuse Theatrical Season is the premier drama event in the city of Syracuse. Hosted in the historic Teatro Massimo, a building inaugurated in 1897 on the island of Ortigia and reopened to the public on December 26, 2016, after an extensive restoration, the festival enlivens the cultural life of Syracuse from November through May, spanning the entire winter and spring season.
The season is produced and curated by the Associazione Teatro della Città, which manages the municipal theater of Syracuse. The festival is supported by the Ministry of Culture, the Sicilian Region, and the University of Catania, reflecting the institutional roots and cultural value of a program that attracts spectators from across the province of Syracuse and eastern Sicily.
The season's program alternates between great texts of Italian and international drama and new contemporary productions. The Ortigia stage features well-known names from the Italian theater scene alongside Sicilian companies and actors who bring the island's traditions and language to life.
Attending the Theatrical Season is also a way to experience Ortigia, the historic center of Syracuse: baroque alleys, squares overlooking the sea, and a cultural tradition that, from ancient theater to the present day, makes the city a reference point for the performing arts in Sicily. The Teatro Massimo, with its intimate auditorium and old-world atmosphere, offers a high-quality, immersive theatrical experience in the Municipality of Syracuse.
The 2025/26 Season opens on November 8-9, 2025, outside the subscription, with Molière's The Imaginary Invalid directed by Salvo Ficarra. The main program kicks off on November 14-16 with Archimede by Costanza Di Quattro, featuring Mario Incudine and live music by Antonio Vasta.
Following are Gin Game with Giuseppe Pambieri and Pamela Villoresi (Nov 28-30), N'gnanzou by and with Vincenzo Pirrotta (Dec 5-7), 8 ½ – If this is a dream inspired by Fellini (Dec 19-21), Penelope by Luana Rondinelli with Ester Pantano (Jan 16-18, 2026), Enigma by Hugh Whitemore with Peppino Mazzotta and Maurizio Marchetti (Jan 30-Feb 1), The Betrothed with Giuseppe Pambieri (Feb 6-8), Letizia goes to war by Agnese Fallongo (Mar 6-8), Barberia by Gianni Clementi (May 8-10), and Driving Miss Daisy with Milena Vukotic (May 22-24). Among the non-subscription shows is also Pipino the Short by Tony Cucchiara.
The Teatro Massimo is located on Via del Teatro, in the heart of Ortigia, the historic center of Syracuse. By car, you can reach the island via the Umbertino bridge; parking is available nearby (Talete, Molo Sant'Antonio). The Syracuse train station is about 1.5 km from the theater. The nearest airport is Catania-Fontanarossa, about an hour away by car.
