There is a place, near Pisticci, where the earth has sculpted itself into clay ridges, spires, and ravines: these are the badlands, a lunar and wild landscape that for years has hosted one of Basilicata's most original festivals, Teatro dei Calanchi. Here, every summer, theatre leaves the halls and amplifiers behind to perform outdoors, completely unplugged, entrusting the actors' voices and nature's sounds to the silence of an amphitheatre that no architect has ever designed.
A Unique Artistic Project
Under the artistic direction of Daniele Onorati, the event each year creates an original production designed to interact with the landscape. The performance is not something to be watched from afar: the audience walks, crosses paths, reaches the heart of the badlands, and becomes part of the experience. The result is a theatre that is simultaneously a performance, an excursion, and an immersion in nature, where dramaturgy blends with the sunset light and the colours of the clay.
Pisticci and its Landscape
Promoted in the territory of the Municipality of Pisticci, in the province of Matera, Teatro dei Calanchi is also an act of love towards a fragile and precious landscape, valued as a cultural and natural asset. An event that attracts spectators sensitive to research theatre and nature lovers, offering an experience that remains memorable for its rarity: few other festivals in Italy can boast such a stage.

For its 11th season, the Teatro dei Calanchi returns to the natural stage of Pisticci with seven performances, running from August 8 to 29, 2026. The heart of the season is the new production Pandora, written and directed by Daniele Onorati, featuring Chiara Ritelli, Marco De Letteriis, Francesca Vignali, Marta Ferrarini, and Matteo Magatti.
Staying true to the festival's signature style—unplugged theatre, without amplification or conventional seating, immersed in the silence of the badlands—the show explores the myth of Pandora in the glow of the sunset. The audience is limited to 200 spectators per performance, and the venue opens 90 minutes before the start to allow the public to walk into the heart of the badlands.

Practical information — Teatro dei Calanchi
Getting there: Pisticci can be reached via the SS 407 Basentana highway; the Calanchi area is located south of the town, in the Cavone river valley. The first part of the road is paved, followed by approximately 2 km of dirt and cobblestone track.
Parking: Available about 50 meters from the entrance for a small, symbolic contribution.
Reservations: Participation is exclusively by online booking via the official website. You will receive a QR code to present at the entrance, and seats are assigned automatically in the order of booking. There are no discounts for groups or minors; admission is free for children up to 6 years old.
Tip: Wear hiking shoes and bring water, as the performances involve walking on natural terrain. We recommend arriving early—the artistic area opens 90 minutes before the start of the program—as access is not permitted once the show has begun.
