Theatre in the lunar landscape of the Pisticci badlands
There is a place near Pisticci where the earth has sculpted itself into ridges, spires, and clay ravines: these are the calanchi (badlands), a wild, lunar landscape that for years has hosted one of Basilicata's most original festivals, Teatro dei Calanchi. Here, every summer, theatre leaves the halls and amplifiers behind to perform outdoors, completely unplugged, entrusting the actors' voices and the sounds of nature to the silence of an amphitheatre that no architect has ever designed.
Under the artistic direction of Daniele Onorati, the event creates an original production each year designed to interact with the landscape. The performance is not something to be watched from afar: the audience walks, crosses the paths, reaches the heart of the badlands and becomes part of the experience. The result is theatre that is simultaneously a performance, an excursion, and an immersion in nature, where the dramaturgy blends with the sunset light and the colours of the clay.
Promoted in the territory of the Municipality of Pisticci, in the province of Matera, Teatro dei Calanchi is also an act of love for a fragile and precious landscape, valued as a cultural and natural asset. An event that attracts spectators sensitive to research theatre and lovers of nature, offering an experience that remains etched in memory for its rarity: few other festivals in Italy can boast such a stage.
For its eleventh edition, Teatro dei Calanchi returns to animate the natural stage of Pisticci throughout August 2026. The heart of the season is the production Pandora, which will come to life on the wild stage of the badlands, true to the festival's stylistic signature: unplugged theatre, immersed in silence and landscape. Artistic direction remains entrusted to Daniele Onorati. Bookings will be open via the official website.
The 11th season runs from August 1st to 30th, 2026 in the Pisticci badlands, with the main production titled Pandora.
The full schedule of performances, times, and details of the route will be announced in the coming weeks on the official website, where it will also be possible to book seats. The format traditionally includes evening performances, often at sunset, with the audience walking to the heart of the badlands.
How to get there: Pisticci is reachable via the SS 407 Basentana; the badlands area is located around the town, with meeting points indicated by the organisation.
Booking: participation in the performances requires booking via the official website, given the limited number of seats and the nature of the experience.
Tip: wear hiking boots and bring water; the performances involve walking on natural terrain and are often held at sunset.
