The summer solstice transforms into music and light at the stone theatre of the Sicani Mountains
In the heart of inland Sicily, in the Sicani Mountains at an altitude of approximately 900 metres, the Teatro Andromeda in Santo Stefano Quisquina hosts one of its most symbolic moments every 21 June: the Solstice of Peace. The event turns the longest day of the year into an experience of light, music, and reflection, in a place where the relationship between architecture, nature, and vision is not merely decorative, but structural.
The central moment of the evening takes place before the Mask of the Word, one of the monumental complex's iconic works. At sunset, around 7:50 PM, the sunlight aligns perfectly with the sculptures, passing through the mouth of the mask and generating a striking weave of shadows, geometries, and golden glimmers. This alignment occurs only once a year and is described by the organisers as a real and unrepeatable event.
The theatre is the work of the shepherd-sculptor Lorenzo Reina, who passed away at the end of 2025. He dedicated nearly thirty years to this extraordinary site, merging his two great passions: art and nature. The auditorium, carved into the landscape, features 108 stone seats that replicate the number and arrangement of the stars in the Andromeda constellation, from which the theatre takes its name. Defined by Reina as "a spaceship flying towards the Andromeda Galaxy," it is considered the highest stone theatre in the world.
Each edition features a concert that accompanies the audience until the solstice phenomenon. The musical programme ranges from singer-songwriter research and Sicilian tradition to folk, soul, and Mediterranean sounds, all in dialogue with the suspended atmosphere of the site. The experience concludes naturally at sunset: when the light fades, the experience is complete.
Promoted by the Fattoria dell'Arte - Teatro Andromeda, the Solstice of Peace has become a highly anticipated event in the cultural summer of the Santo Stefano Quisquina area, in the province of Agrigento, Sicily. It attracts an audience drawn to the encounter between contemporary art, landscape, and astronomy in one of the most evocative sites of the Sicilian hinterland.
On Sunday, 21 June 2026, the Teatro Andromeda celebrated the Solstice of Peace in an emotionally charged evening, the first event following the passing of its founder Lorenzo Reina, to whose memory the event was dedicated.
The initially announced concert by Alfio Antico, a master of the frame drum, could not take place due to the artist's health; in his place, the evening featured the Sicilian singer-songwriter Alessandra Salerno, with a performance weaving together Sicilian musical tradition, contemporary languages, and Mediterranean influences.
Public reception began at 6:00 PM with entry to the Fattoria dell'Arte, and the concert started at 6:30 PM. At sunset, the highlight occurred: the sunlight passed through the mouth of the Mask of the Word, sealing the experience with the solstice alignment.
The Teatro Andromeda is located in Contrada Rocca, in Santo Stefano Quisquina (AG), in the Sicani Mountains. It can be reached by car from the Agrigento hinterland; the final stretch is an uphill country road, so comfortable shoes are recommended for the walk to the auditorium.
Public reception starts at 6:00 PM with entry to the Fattoria dell'Arte, the concert begins at 6:30 PM, and the event concludes naturally at sunset. Tickets start from approximately 18-20 euros plus booking fees, available for purchase online via the official platform.
We recommend arriving early to enjoy the site in the late afternoon light and bringing water and a light jacket for the evening at altitude.
