About Taurisano Living Nativity

Every year, between Christmas and Epiphany, the historic center of Taurisano transforms into a small Salento-style Bethlehem thanks to the Living Nativity, one of the most heartfelt Christmas traditions in lower Salento. Amidst narrow alleys, courtyards, and ancient Lecce stone houses, over a hundred performers bring traditional crafts back to life, while the air fills with the scent of pittule and purciddruzzi, paired with fine local wine. A landmark event that blends faith, folk tradition, and craftsmanship in the heart of the Lecce province.

The Taurisano Living Nativity

During the festive season, Taurisano—a small town in lower Salento, in the province of Lecce—becomes one of the capitals of the Apulian living nativity scene. The village, with its courtyards, narrow alleys, and ancient Lecce stone houses, provides a natural backdrop for reliving the atmosphere of ancient Bethlehem. For over fifteen years, the community has mobilized to stage a performance that involves hundreds of people and attracts visitors from all over Salento.

A village that becomes Bethlehem

The heart of the event is the Youth Living Nativity, promoted by the Youth Ministry of the Transfiguration of Our Lord Jesus Christ Parish. Established in 2009, it has surpassed fifteen editions and features over a hundred performers each year, including dozens of teenagers and young people, with the support of numerous volunteers. The ancient houses of the historic center serve as the backdrop for a faithful re-enactment of daily life from the past, where every house tells the story of a craft, a scene, or a traditional gesture.

The crafts and flavors of Salento

Strolling along the route, visitors encounter performers engaged in the traditional crafts that have shaped the history of the region: Lecce stone carving, pottery, wrought iron, sewing, and weaving. There is also a convivial moment with the tasting of typical Salento products—the famous pittule and purciddruzzi—accompanied by a good glass of local wine. It is an experience that engages all the senses and captures the authentic soul of a town of just over twelve thousand inhabitants.

The different souls of the Taurisano nativity

Alongside the Youth Nativity, Taurisano has created other evocative representations over the years. The Crafts Living Nativity, set up in the town's ancient quarries, brings together over 170 performers and focuses on traditional trades, with the support of the Puglia Region. The Hunchback of Notre Dame Nativity, on the other hand, offers an immersive journey through church bell towers, inspired by Victor Hugo's novel and the themes of light and liberation. Together, these initiatives make Taurisano a reference point for those who love living nativity scenes in Salento.

When it takes place

The Taurisano Living Nativity takes place during the Christmas holidays, from Christmas Day until Epiphany, with evening openings in the historic center. The grand finale coincides with January 6th, when the arrival of the Three Wise Men brings the performances to a beautiful close, often enriched by musical moments and artistic exhibitions.
