The Carnival of the Talocci hamlet, featuring handmade allegorical floats and Sabina traditions
The Talocci Carnival is the traditional carnival celebration of the Talocci hamlet, in the municipality of Fara in Sabina, in the province of Rieti, in the heart of the Lazio region's Sabina area. Reaching its 39th edition in 2026, it is one of the historic highlights of the so-called widespread Carnival of Fara, which involves several hamlets in the territory—from Corese Terra to Passo Corese, and from Canneto to Talocci—throughout the carnival weeks with parades, entertainment, and traditional cuisine.
Born in the 1980s, the Talocci Carnival has grown to become a benchmark for popular culture in Sabina. At the heart of the festival are the handmade allegorical floats, crafted with care and passion by local associations and neighborhood groups: months of work, ingenuity, and patience take shape in colorful, scenic structures, often inspired by old carnival traditions or current events. It is a collective story capable of weaving together places, people, and generations.
The event takes over the village squares, with the Carnival exhibition set up in Piazza Mazzini and food stalls in the Fonte Pesole area. The morning is dedicated to entertainment for all ages, with creative workshops, shows, and music; in the afternoon, the most anticipated moment arrives: the parade of allegorical floats along the streets of the town center, accompanied by costumed groups.
Fara in Sabina is one of the largest and most populous municipalities in the province of Rieti, overlooking the Tiber valley and rich in villages and hamlets. The Talocci Carnival is promoted by the Municipality of Fara in Sabina together with the Pro Loco Fara in Sabina APS and local associations, with the patronage of the Province of Rieti. For those visiting Lazio in winter, it is the ideal opportunity to discover the genuineness of an authentic village festival, far from the major tourist circuits and deeply rooted in the community.
