The swimming crossing around the Island of San Giulio, in the heart of Lake Orta
Swimming Under the Stars is one of the most beloved summer events on Lake Orta: a swimming crossing that takes place in Orta San Giulio, in the province of Novara, in the heart of Piedmont. Every year, on the night around August 13th, when the Cusio sky lights up with the Perseid meteor shower, dozens of swimmers gather on the shores of the lake to tackle the cool, crystal-clear waters surrounding the famous Island of San Giulio.
The event features three distinct challenges, designed to accommodate athletes of all ages and experience levels:
The start, finish, and transition area are located in the school courtyard, in Piazzetta Regazzoni, just a short walk from the pier and Piazza Motta.
Swimming Under the Stars is much more than a sporting competition: born as the Luigi Stringara Memorial, it is organized by the Canottieri Lago d'Orta together with the Centro d'Incontro Legrese and ADMO Piemonte, the Bone Marrow Donor Association. Each edition is an opportunity to promote the culture of donation and provide participants with information on tissue typing. The event is part of the Nobile dei Laghi swimming crossing circuit, which brings together the main swimming events of the pre-Alpine lakes.
The setting for the event is one of Italy's most beautiful villages: Orta San Giulio, overlooking the lake of the same name and dominated by the Sacro Monte, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Swimming at sunset around the Island of San Giulio, with its Romanesque basilica and Benedictine monastery emerging from the water, offers a unique experience where athletic effort blends with the magic of the Piedmontese landscape.
The 13th Swimming Under the Stars will be held in Orta San Giulio on Thursday, August 13, 2026. The three-event format is confirmed, with start and finish in Piazzetta Regazzoni, in the heart of the Piedmontese village. The event, the Luigi Stringara Memorial, is part of the Nobile dei Laghi circuit and renews its commitment to solidarity in favor of ADMO Piemonte.
Transition area, start, and finish in the school courtyard in Piazzetta Regazzoni. At the end of the race, athletes are refreshed and the awards ceremony takes place; each participant receives a screen-printed gadget for the occasion.
The complete Island of San Giulio Loop (1,400 m) at sunset and the evocative night swim under the Perseid meteor shower. ADMO Piemonte information stand for bone marrow donation.
Orta San Giulio can be reached by car via the A26 motorway (Borgomanero or Arona exit) and by train via the Orta-Miasino station on the Novara-Domodossola line. The historic center is pedestrian-only: large parking areas are available in the upper part of the village.
Race packs can be collected on the day of the event from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the Oratorio di Orta; on-site registration is possible from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM.
For the Island Loop, a medical certificate of good health is required; for the night swim, a competitive medical certificate or registration with a sports federation or CONI body is required.
