Swedish cinema on the terrace of Villa San Michele in Anacapri
Swedish Film Goes Capri is a film festival that, every year at the start of summer, transforms the terrace of Villa San Michele in Anacapri into an open-air cinema overlooking the Gulf of Naples. The event stems from the deep bond between Sweden and the island of Capri, embodied by the Swedish physician and writer Axel Munthe, author of The Story of San Michele and creator of the villa that hosts the event today.
Promoted by the Axel Munthe Foundation in close collaboration with the Embassy of Sweden in Italy and with the support of the Campania Region Film Commission, the festival presents premieres, documentaries, and works of Scandinavian cinema, often followed by Q&A sessions with the audience. The format features screenings preceded by short introductory talks, hosted by Villa San Michele superintendent Kristina Kappelin alongside special guests, to delve into the themes of the films.
The fifth edition in 2026 took place from June 3rd to 6th, featuring four evenings with free admission. The festival alternated between Swedish films and Italian works, bringing together actors and directors from both scenes: from the young Tecla Insolia to the stars of the series Mare Fuori, as well as Cristina Donadio and Sabina Guzzanti, in a program that addressed themes such as the fragility of the new generations, social redemption, and democracy.
The venue itself is part of the experience: the panoramic terrace of Villa San Michele, with its columns, gardens, and view of the Faraglioni, offers one of the most famous backdrops in the Mediterranean. Watching a screening at sunset, with the sea in the background, makes Swedish Film Goes Capri an experience unlike any traditional indoor film festival.
Supported by the Municipality of Anacapri and included in the summer cultural calendar of Campania, the festival is now a reference point for residents, cinephiles, and visitors to the island of Capri. Its free admission and international character make it a unique opportunity for interaction between the public, artists, and institutions, fostering a dialogue between the cultures of Northern and Southern Europe.
The fifth edition featured four evenings, starting each night at 8:00 PM on the terrace of Villa San Michele, all with free admission.
Maurizio Gemma, director of the Campania Region Film Commission, was also in attendance. Each screening was preceded by an introductory talk hosted by superintendent Kristina Kappelin.
