Two days of improvised music and sound experimentation between Bagni di Lucca and Santa Maria del Giudice
Superfreefest is a musical event entirely dedicated to improvisation and sound experimentation, held between the town of Bagni di Lucca and the village of Santa Maria del Giudice, in the province of Lucca, Tuscany. Born from an idea rooted in the Lucca improvised music scene and spearheaded by guitarist and educator Eugenio Sanna, the festival brings together musicians from vastly different backgrounds—from classical to punk, electronic to contemporary art music—encouraging them to engage in dialogue within an intimate and informal setting.
What makes Superfreefest truly unique is its format. Alongside concerts and workshops, the festival features moments where sets are formed by random draw: musicians who often do not know each other find themselves playing together for a few minutes in ensembles decided on the spot. It is a gamble on mutual listening and the ability to build something unique without a score, where the unexpected and even the mistake become an integral part of the creation.
The festival takes place over two days in two distinct locations. The first day is held in the evocative Sala Rosa of the Circolo dei Forestieri, a historic 19th-century building overlooking Piazza Jean Varraud in the center of Bagni di Lucca. The second day moves to the Pieve Vecchia of Santa Maria del Giudice, an ancient Romanesque parish church nestled in the Lucca countryside, whose walls host the sounds of the final day.
A significant part of Superfreefest is dedicated to education: throughout the two days, workshops led by musicians and researchers are held, open to both professionals and the curious. Themes range from the practice of improvisation to music creation through coding, and the relationship between sound and silence.
Admission to the evening performances and participation in the workshops are free, in keeping with the festival's open and communal spirit. Superfreefest is aimed at those who love sound research and those who want to approach music free from conventions, in a quiet corner of Tuscany far from the major summer festival circuits.
The 2026 edition, the third of the festival, offered a broader program than in previous years, spread over two days and two venues. The evenings brought together musicians of different backgrounds in trios, duos, and acoustic sets, as well as a final concert open to all participants. There was also space for education, with workshops dedicated to improvisation, the relationship between sound and silence, and music creation through coding.
Bagni di Lucca can be reached by car via the SS12 del Brennero road following the Serchio Valley, or by train on the Lucca–Aulla line, stopping at Bagni di Lucca. The Sala Rosa of the Circolo dei Forestieri is located in Piazza Jean Varraud, in the historic center. Santa Maria del Giudice is a village in the Municipality of Lucca, accessible by car along the road connecting Lucca to Pisa.
Admission to the evening events and participation in the workshops are free. For information and to sign up for the workshops, you can call +39 338 2319322 or +39 349 5126076, or email [email protected].
