A race that brings the legend of Coppi back to life

Sulle Strade di Coppi is the signature road race of Villalvernia, a small town in the Alessandria province in the heart of the Tortona region of Piedmont. The event dates back to 1979 and, until the mid-nineties, celebrated the life of the great Fausto Coppi, the 'Campionissimo' and icon of Italian cycling, who was born and raised in these very lands. After a thirty-year break, the race was brought back to life on May 1st thanks to the efforts of the local municipality and the Azalai ASD sports association, both committed to reviving a tradition deeply cherished by the community.

The course through Villalvernia, Carezzano, and Paderna

The route spans approximately 11 km with a 250-meter elevation gain: a scenic up-and-down trek through the towns of Villalvernia, Carezzano, and Paderna, following the hilly roads that define this corner of Piedmont. The start and finish lines are located at the Il Broglio green area, the sports hub of Villalvernia that serves as the event's headquarters. The race is competitive and FIDAL-recognized, aimed at registered athletes but open to anyone looking to challenge themselves on a varied and demanding course.

Sport and conviviality in honor of the Campionissimo

Sulle Strade di Coppi is more than just a race; it is a village festival that draws athletes, enthusiasts, and spectators alike. The day begins with breakfast and continues after the race with a barbecue and social aperitif, while a play area is set up for children. It captures the atmosphere of a grand occasion, making this event a highly anticipated date not only for runners but for the entire Villalvernia community.

A tribute to Fausto Coppi

Running Sulle Strade di Coppi means traversing the places of a legend. Fausto Coppi, originally from nearby Castellania, inextricably linked his name to this hilly territory in the Alessandria area. The race celebrates his memory and keeps his spirit alive, combining a passion for sport with a deep connection to local roots. The municipal administration has expressed its intention to make the event a permanent fixture on the Piedmontese running calendar.

Organizers

The race is organized by Azalai ASD in partnership with the Municipality of Villalvernia, with the collaboration of the Pro Loco, the Croce Verde Villalvernia, and the municipalities of Carezzano and Paderna. This teamwork has successfully restored one of the most historic running events in the Tortona area to the calendar.
