Subiaco City Granfondo - Monti Simbruini Park

A granfondo in the heart of the Simbruini Mountains

Established on September 1, 2019, as the final event of the Pedalatium Circuit, the Subiaco City Granfondo - Monti Simbruini Park has quickly become one of the most anticipated dates in the Lazio amateur cycling calendar. The race takes place every year in early May, starting and finishing on Via Alberto dalla Chiesa in the center of Subiaco. It leads participants to discover the Upper Aniene Valley, passing through the towns of Agosta, Marano Equo, Arsoli, Jenne, Cervara di Roma, Affile, Arcinazzo Romano, Trevi nel Lazio, and Vallepietra.

The routes: three distances for every rider

The event offers three tracks suited to different fitness levels and ambitions:

• Granfondo: 122 km with 2,300 meters of elevation gain, the flagship route touching ten towns in the park;
• Mediofondo: 98 km with 1,800 meters of elevation gain;
• Cicloturistica: 64.9 km with 1,250 meters of elevation gain, designed for those who prefer to ride without a competitive ranking.

The main challenge is the climb to Monte Livata (1,420 meters), tackled in the middle of the race, followed by the ascents to Cervara di Roma—the highest village in the province of Rome—and Arsoli. Three refreshment stations along the route (at km 57.6, 71.9, and 105) support riders until the finish line.

Subiaco, land of Saint Benedict

The town of Subiaco, in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, is one of the most evocative places in Lazio. Here, Saint Benedict of Nursia lived as a hermit and founded the famous monasteries of Santa Scolastica and the Sacro Speco, carved into the rock above the Aniene valley. Cycling through these landscapes means crossing ancient forests, perched villages, and scenic roads within the Simbruini Mountains Regional Natural Park, the largest protected area in the region. It is no coincidence that the park headquarters on Corso Cesare Battisti serves as the race pack collection point.

History and Hall of Fame

After the inaugural 2019 edition and the pandemic-related hiatus, the granfondo has become a permanent fixture on the calendar. Among the women, Loretta Giudici secured four consecutive victories from 2022 to 2025, before Federica Cancellieri returned to the top spot in 2026, matching her 2021 win. In 2025, the long route was won by Rossano Mauti (Gattobike Team), while the seventh edition in 2026 crowned Ivan Martinelli (Go Fast) with a time of 3h18'09".

Circuits, timing, and organization

The race is organized as part of the Pedalatium Circuit with ACSI Ciclismo recognition and is also a stage of the Volchem Circuit. Timing and online registration are managed by Kronoservice, featuring rankings for all categories, a "Him & Her" couple's formula, and team promotions.

The village and the atmosphere

The race weekend is a true celebration of sport: the expo village opens on Saturday afternoon for material collection, while on Sunday, after the finish, the traditional pasta party and awards ceremony turn the center of Subiaco into a meeting point for cyclists, families, and supporters.
