Two days of sweetness, music, and rural tradition in the Landi district
The Strawberry Festival is one of the most cherished spring events in the municipality of Genzano di Roma, located in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, in the heart of the Castelli Romani and the Lazio region. It takes place in the Landi district, in Piazza delle Lotte Contadine—a name that reflects the agricultural identity of this area, where strawberry cultivation has been an economic resource and a defining feature of the landscape for generations.
The event is organized by the Landi Neighborhood Committee together with the Pro Loco Genzano di Roma A.P.S. and supported by the Municipality of Genzano di Roma, as part of a multi-year agreement that has firmly established the event in the city's calendar. It is an authentically grassroots festival: no major sponsors, but a tight-knit network of volunteers, schools, cultural associations, and local farms.
The festival structure is well-established and spans an entire weekend. Saturday afternoon kicks off with the artisan market and activities for children, including remote-controlled car rallies and creative workshops. The event also features a mosaic exhibition, which has showcased thematic paths curated by local artists over the years.
The symbolic moment of the festival arrives on Sunday in the late afternoon when, following greetings from the municipal administration, the free distribution of strawberries takes place. It is the ritual that gives meaning to the entire event: the strawberries come from local, zero-kilometer producers and are offered to the public in an atmosphere of great community spirit. In recent years, this event has drawn hundreds of families from across the Castelli Romani.
Visitors coming to Genzano di Roma for the Strawberry Festival will find a town that deserves more than a quick visit. Overlooking Lake Nemi, Genzano is famous throughout Italy for its Infiorata—the carpet of flower petals that covers Via Belardi every year for Corpus Domini—and for its IGP homemade bread, baked in wood-fired ovens. The strawberry season and the Infiorata overlap in the spring calendar, offering a double reason to visit the Castelli Romani in May and June.
What distinguishes the Strawberry Festival from many more commercial food and wine festivals is its neighborhood scale. The square fills up without barriers, admission is free, children run between the stands while adults listen to Roman music and live percussion. It is a festival that, as the Pro Loco noted, demonstrates how a collaborating community—volunteers, schools, businesses, and institutions—can be strong and dynamic.
The Landi district of Genzano di Roma hosted a new edition of the Strawberry Festival on May 16 and 17, 2026, organized by the Landi Neighborhood Committee together with the Pro Loco Genzano di Roma A.P.S. and the Municipality, as part of the multi-year agreement between the three entities.
Saturday afternoon opened with the artisan market and the remote-controlled car rally for children, accompanied by the mosaic workshop Il Frutto della Pietra. The evening continued with a dance school performance, DJ entertainment, and a live concert by the band Figli delle Stelle.
Sunday featured the Vespa Club Lanuvio gathering in the morning and, in the afternoon, a sports car exhibition, children's activities with face painting, and folk performances. After greetings from the municipal administration, the free distribution of strawberries took place, the symbolic moment of the event. The closing was entrusted to the West African percussion and dance of the Mandenko school and a concert by the band Altrosenso, dedicated to Roman music.
The strawberry lottery also took place over the two days.
By car: From the Grande Raccordo Anulare (GRA) of Rome, take exit 23 toward Via Appia Nuova (SS7) in the direction of Albano Laziale, then continue to Genzano di Roma; the Landi district is located in the lower part of the city. Alternatively, take the A1 motorway, exit at Valmontone, and follow the provincial road to the Castelli Romani.
By train: Take the FL4 line (Rome Termini - Velletri) and get off at Genzano di Roma station; from there, you can continue by local bus or on foot.
By plane: Rome Ciampino Airport is about 20 km away, and Rome Fiumicino Airport is about 50 km away.
Admission to the event is free. Only food at the stalls and purchases at the artisan market are paid. The Sunday strawberry distribution is offered to the public for free while supplies last.
