The 8.2 km non-competitive run through the Cilento village, in memory of Silvio Fimiani
Every summer, the small municipality of Montano Antilia, in the province of Salerno, transforms for an afternoon into a sprawling open-air running course. The Stra Montano - Silvio Fimiani Memorial is a non-competitive race that traverses the village and its surrounding countryside along an 8.2-kilometer mixed-terrain circuit, designed for both dedicated runners and those simply looking to enjoy a day of outdoor sport in an exceptional natural setting.
The initiative is dedicated to the memory of Silvio Fimiani, a young man from Montano Antilia who tragically lost his life at 22 in an August 2022 road accident on the Cilentana highway. For him, sport was synonymous with passion, friendship, and sharingโvalues that the organizers sought to uphold by launching an annual event in 2025 that unites the entire town. It is more than just a race; it is a moment of community where running becomes a tangible way to keep a memory alive and bring people together.
The race starts at Largo Ponte Monaci. From there, the 8.2-kilometer track winds through mixed terrain: the narrow alleys of the Cilento village, roads immersed in greenery, challenging uphill stretches, and a passage through the hamlet of Abatemarcoโan ancient core named after Marco, abbot of the monastery of Santa Cecilia, once renowned for its flax cultivation and processing.
The event is promoted by the Circolo Culturale Ricreativo Pegaso, a local volunteer association, with the patronage of the Municipality of Montano Antilia, in collaboration with the local branch of the Italian Alpine Club (CAI) and the support of Sodalis CSV Salerno, the provincial service center for volunteering. This structure perfectly reflects the event's spirit: grassroots sport, hiking culture, and social commitment along the same path.
Perched at an altitude of approximately 700 meters, Montano Antilia is one of the villages of the Cilento hinterland in Campania, with just over two thousand inhabitants spread between the main town and the hamlets of Abatemarco and Massicelle. It is a territory defined by forests, springs, and panoramic roads, far from the coastal crowds. Running here on a late July afternoon means traversing a landscape that shifts with every turn. For visitors, the Stra Montano is a unique way to discover this lesser-known side of the province of Salerno.
Those who do not wish to run can still follow the event along the route: the sight of participants passing through the alleys and country roads is one of the most cherished moments of the Montano summer.
On Sunday, July 12, 2026, the Municipality of Montano Antilia, in the province of Salerno, hosted the second edition of the Stra Montano - Silvio Fimiani Memorial. Registration and race pack collection were held from 3:30 PM at Largo Ponte Monaci, with the official start at 6:00 PM, during the coolest part of the day.
The 8.2-kilometer mixed-terrain route took participants from the village alleys to green country roads, featuring challenging climbs and a passage through the hamlet of Abatemarco. The non-competitive format allowed both trained runners and casual walkers to share the same path.
Fifty participants crossed the finish line. Among the men, the winner was Alessandro Rescigno, followed by Luigi Palmieri and Francesco Riccio. In the women's category, victory went to Rita Carrato, representing Montano Antilia, ahead of Cristiana Consolante and Anna Gaetana Grieco.
In 2026, the event, organized by the Circolo Culturale Ricreativo Pegaso with the patronage of the Municipality, the collaboration of the local Italian Alpine Club (CAI) branch, and the support of Sodalis CSV Salerno, continued to honor the memory of Silvio Fimiani, the 22-year-old who passed away in August 2022. Sport, sharing, and remembrance were the three pillars of the day.
