The Christmas of the Bells beneath the Twelve Tower, one of the five Original Christmas Markets of South Tyrol
Every year, from late November to Epiphany, the historic center of Vipiteno (Sterzing), in the province of Bolzano, transforms into a nostalgic Christmas village. The Sterzinger Glockenweihnacht—literally the "Christmas of the Bells"—takes its name from the Twelve Tower (Zwölferturm), the imposing 1470 tower that dominates the square. Since 2020, it has featured a 25-bell carillon that marks the rhythm of the market days. The sound echoing through the main street is the unmistakable signature of this event, one of the most evocative in all of South Tyrol.
The heart of the market is Piazza Città, the most elegant arcaded street in Vipiteno, considered one of the most beautiful alpine villages in South Tyrol. Here, about 35 wooden stalls are carefully arranged, offering authentic Tyrolean crafts—hand-carved elves and figurines, hand-painted glass candle holders, traditional textiles and placemats, and Christmas decorations—alongside food stands. Specialties to enjoy while strolling include Zelten (the South Tyrolean Christmas fruit bread), Stollen, Spitzbuam cookies, apple cider, and, of course, steaming mulled wine.
Vipiteno is part of the prestigious Original Christmas Markets of South Tyrol circuit, alongside Bolzano, Merano, Bressanone, and Brunico: five historic markets united by the same philosophy of authenticity and sustainability. All are certified Green Events, focusing on eco-sustainability and the promotion of local craftsmanship and ancient traditions passed down through generations. Vipiteno is also part of the "Alpen Advent" circuit, which connects South Tyrolean markets to other locations in the Alpine region.
The market is more than just shopping: the calendar is packed with events. Every day, the Twelve Tower carillon plays its melodies, while on weekends, Christmas carols and songs resonate in the square. A must-see is the traditional Saint Nicholas procession, accompanied by the fearsome Krampus, held on December 5th. Throughout Advent, there are concerts by alpine choirs and bands, parades of little angels with the lighting of Advent candles, guided tours of the village, evening torchlight processions, and the evocative ascent to the "wish bell" at Monte Cavallo. This atmosphere makes the Glockenweihnacht a beloved destination for families and travelers seeking the most authentic alpine Christmas.
From November 27, 2026, to January 6, 2027, the town square in Vipiteno once again hosts the "Christmas of the Bells" market. Gift stalls are open daily from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM (on the opening day of November 27, from 5:00 PM), while food stands extend their hours into the evening. The 25-bell carillon of the Twelve Tower marks the days and provides the soundtrack for a stroll among Tyrolean crafts, local products, and mulled wine.
The detailed calendar of individual 2026 concerts is published by the Vipiteno Tourist Board as the opening date approaches.
