Authorial drama in the historic theatre of Macerata Feltria, in the heart of Montefeltro
The Angelo Battelli Theatre is the cultural heart of Macerata Feltria, a small village in the Province of Pesaro and Urbino, in the inner Marche region, bordering Romagna and San Marino. Named after the illustrious physicist Angelo Battelli, a native of the town, the theatre was inaugurated on September 26, 1932, replacing the small 18th-century Antimi Clari Theatre. The horseshoe-shaped auditorium with three tiers of boxes (fifty-six in total) replicates the classic layout of 19th-century historic theatres, with elegant volute stuccoes connecting the pillars of the boxes to the parapets: an intimate and precious setting, where every spectator feels part of the show.
Every year, between December and March, the Battelli hosts a concise but high-quality theatre season, as part of the regional project Teatri d'Autore (Authorial Theatres), a network of historic theatres in the Province of Pesaro and Urbino that brings major drama productions to small towns. The season is organised by the CTU Cesare Questa of the University of Urbino, together with the Municipality of Macerata Feltria and AMAT (Marchigiana Association of Theatre Activities), with the support of the Marche Region and the Ministry of Culture.
The programme alternates different registers and languages, always with a keen eye on contemporary dramaturgy and civil themes:
Attending a performance at the Battelli is also an opportunity to discover Macerata Feltria: the medieval village with the Pieve di San Cassiano, the Cassero fortress, the Civic Archaeological and Palaeontological Museum, and the renowned Pitinum Thermae thermal baths. An evening at the theatre here means combining culture with the slow discovery of one of the most evocative places in the Marche's Montefeltro region.
The 2025/26 season of the Angelo Battelli Theatre, titled "Nessuno รจ un'isola" (No One is an Island), took place as part of the Teatri d'Autore project, organised by the CTU Cesare Questa of the University of Urbino, the Municipality of Macerata Feltria, and AMAT. Five performances animated the historic village theatre from December 2025 to March 2026, alternating comedy, civil monologues, reinterpretations of classics, and new dramaturgy, with two regional premieres.
