The fire ritual in the Arbëreshë village of the Monti Dauni
The St. Joseph's Fires, known in the local Arbëreshë language as «Zjarre e Shën Xhësepit», are one of the most cherished traditions of Casalvecchio di Puglia, a small village nestled in the Monti Dauni near Foggia. Every year, on the eve of St. Joseph's Day on March 19th, the historic center glows as massive bonfires are lit simultaneously across the town's squares and districts: a propitiatory ritual rooted in popular devotion and the ancient bond between the community, faith, and the land.
Casalvecchio di Puglia is one of the oldest Italo-Albanian communities in Southern Italy, founded by Arbëreshë refugees who have preserved their language, rituals, and identity for centuries. The fire festival is one of the occasions where this heritage shines most brightly: the very name of the event, passed down in Arbëreshë, testifies to the deep connection between the celebration and the Albanian origins of the municipality, set within the rolling hills of the Monti Dauni, in the Apulia Region.
The evening comes alive with the simultaneous lighting of the fires, the climactic moment that transforms the village into a landscape of flames and light. The ritual is accompanied by live folk music, with roving bands animating the alleys and squares, traditional songs, and dances performed by local folk groups. Public participation is total: residents and visitors gather around the bonfires for rituals, blessings, and moments of collective celebration.
The beating heart of the event is the culinary trail set up along the streets of the center, where you can taste traditional local and Arbëreshë dishes, with recipes handed down from generation to generation. The stalls offer typical products from the Monti Dauni, creating a gastronomic journey that attracts large crowds every year, often resulting in a complete sell-out.
In recent years, the festival has strengthened ties with other famous fire rituals in Central and Southern Italy. Delegations from La Ndocciata of Agnone (Upper Molise) and the Fracchia of San Marco in Lamis have participated in Casalvecchio, alongside representatives from Monte Sant'Angelo and San Marzano di San Giuseppe. This cultural twinning places the Fires of Casalvecchio within a national network of ancient pyric-devotional traditions.
Organized by the municipal administration with the Torre Normanna Association and under the patronage of the Apulia Region, the St. Joseph's Fires festival is now much more than a religious observance: it is a moment of collective identity that celebrates the intangible heritage of a unique community, one of the most significant of the Apulian Arbëreshë.
On Saturday, March 21, 2026, Casalvecchio di Puglia celebrated a new edition of the St. Joseph's Fires, with record attendance and a sell-out at the culinary stalls. The historic center was illuminated by bonfires lit in the village squares, featuring typical products, traditional dishes, and recipes passed down through generations.
The evening was accompanied by live folk music with roving groups and performances by the folk group Aria Sonora Danze Popolari. Among the most popular moments was the identity song sung together by residents and visitors. The edition was enriched by the presence of delegations from La Ndocciata of Agnone and the Fracchia of San Marco in Lamis, along with representatives from Monte Sant'Angelo and San Marzano di San Giuseppe.
