Rituals, herbs, fire, and solstice chants in the Iblei mountains
St. John's Night in Avola Antica celebrates the summer solstice, the moment when light reaches its peak and Sicilian folk tradition becomes charged with rituals, legends, and propitiatory gestures. The event takes place in contrada Avola Antica, in the municipality of Avola (Province of Syracuse, Sicily), at the entrance to the stunning Cavagrande del Cassibile Reserve, in a hilly landscape that serves as a natural setting for the ritual.
Organized by Raw Sicily APS in collaboration with the Iblei Museum Network, the evening is designed as a "collective ritual of herbs, fire, songs, drums, folk tales, and ancient wisdom." It is not a performance to be watched passively, but a participatory experience that reconnects the threads of Iblei rural memory: the gathering of St. John's herbs, the night dew, the mantras, and the cunti (traditional tales) that have accompanied the solstice transition in the Sicilian countryside for centuries.
The cultural heart of the event is the "Healing Plants and Words" trail, led by ethno-anthropologist and naturalist Paolino Uccello, co-founder of the Iblei Museum Network. Through Iblei ethnobotany, solstice myths, and the sacredness of herbs, participants rediscover the deep bond between the territory's wild plants and folk medicine. The director of the Museum Network, Cetty Bruno, guides the public in identifying the herbs traditionally associated with St. John.
The soundscape is curated by Curamunì (Maurizio Battista and Roberta Gionfriddo), contemporary singers who research the healing chants of the Sicilian tradition, and the Coro del Mare, a female vocal group led by Tiziana Palumbo that weaves rhythmic chants with frame drums. Voice, rhythm, and ancestral knowledge merge into a single collective tapestry.
Raw Sicily president Elena Rizza describes the event as a form of "cultural resistance" in defense of rural memory and folk tradition. This is how St. John's Night becomes, every year, an opportunity to restore value to the intangible heritage of the Iblei and to Avola, a pearl of the Baroque and the Val di Noto.
The fourth edition of St. John's Night in Avola Antica takes place on Sunday, June 21, 2026, on the occasion of the summer solstice. Organized by Raw Sicily APS with the Iblei Museum Network, it confirms the format of a collective ritual involving herbs, fire, folk tales, and traditional Sicilian music. The 2026 edition is dedicated to the memory of Peppe Di Mauro, a percussion master and researcher of the frame drum, whose artistic legacy continues through the Coro del Mare.
The event is led by Cetty Bruno (director of the Iblei Museum Network) and concludes with the propitiatory ash ritual.
