Taurisano's most heartfelt celebration, blending faith, processions, and major concerts in the heart of Salento

The SS. Crocifisso Festival is the most deeply felt celebration in Taurisano, a town in the Lower Salento area of the province of Lecce. Its roots date back to the early 20th century: it was the devotion of spouses Vito Schiavano and Maria Marraffa that led to the construction of the chapel dedicated to the Most Holy Crucifix in 1904, inspired by the tradition of pilgrimages to the nearby sanctuary of Galatone. For over a century, this devotion has been renewed every year at the beginning of May, involving the entire Taurisano community.
The spiritual program is the cornerstone around which everything else revolves. The festivities open with the solemn triduum, three days of preparation with evening celebrations at the SS. Crocifisso chapel. The highlight, traditionally on May 3rd (the Feast of the Finding of the Holy Cross), begins with morning masses at the chapel and the transfer of the sacred image to the mother church of SS. Apostoli Pietro e Paolo. In the evening, following the solemn mass, the procession winds through the town streets accompanied by the "G. Verdi" Musical Association Grand Concert Band of Taurisano, concluding with a fireworks display.
Beyond its devotional dimension, the SS. Crocifisso Festival is famous in Salento for its free evening concert, which brings renowned names from the Italian music scene to Taurisano every year. Past editions have featured artists and groups such as Collage, Matia Bazar, the duo Audio 2, and Neapolitan percussionist Tony Esposito. The town center lights up with luminarie (traditional light displays), while the "So What" youth area hosts street food, craft beer, and DJ sets that keep the night alive until late.
The festival is a cornerstone of Taurisano's identity: a successful blend of sacred and secular where faith, music, band traditions, and conviviality merge. For those visiting Salento at the start of the warm season, it is the perfect opportunity to discover an authentic town—also known for its famous Crypt of the Crucifix, a jewel of rock-hewn art—and to experience one of its most deeply rooted collective traditions.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition of the SS. Crocifisso Festival has not yet been published. Based on previous editions, we expect the solemn triduum of preparation, holy masses, and the procession through the streets of Taurisano accompanied by the "G. Verdi" Grand Concert Band, the fireworks display, and the grand musical evening with free admission, featuring street food and DJ sets in the "So What" area. The name of the guest artist and the precise dates will be communicated by the committee in the weeks leading up to the festival.
