The May 1st cycling tour in the heart of Salento
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
On the morning of May 1st, as Italy celebrates Labor Day, Squinzano hits the road on bicycles. Squinzano in Bici has become a spring tradition in this Salento town: a non-competitive cycling tour that turns the streets of the municipality, in the province of Lecce, into a shared path dedicated to gentle mobility. It is not a race, but a collective ride on two wheels, designed to enjoy the outdoors and slowly rediscover the corners of the local area.
The starting point is the town's living room, Piazza Plebiscito, in the heart of Squinzano. From here, the group sets off early in the morning along the city streets, on an itinerary designed to be accessible to everyone, with no competitive pressure. The spirit is one of sustainable mobility and meeting fellow citizens: all you need to participate is a bicycle, a bit of enthusiasm, and the desire to ride in good company.
The event is deeply inclusive. Citizens of all ages, children, entire families, and even municipal officials take part, riding side by side. The popular nature of the event combines outdoor sports with a fun, social dimension, featuring a friendly, lighthearted "competition" without official rankings. At the end of the collective ride, symbolic prizes are awarded—to the oldest cyclist, the youngest, and the largest group—followed by a final raffle to conclude the day of celebration.
The initiative is promoted by the Centro Radio C.B. Squinzano and the Civil Protection Volunteers, with the patronage of the Municipality of Squinzano and the collaboration of local sports associations, including ASD Apulia Salentina and ASD Bikers Squinzano. It is a grassroots event born from local volunteering, which enhances the sense of community and environmental awareness through a simple, accessible means of transport like the bicycle.
Squinzano is located in the north of Salento, in Puglia, just a few kilometers from Lecce and not far from the Adriatic coast. The town is famous for its band tradition and Squinzano DOC wine, but on May 1st, the spotlight is entirely on bicycles. The ride offers the chance to cross the town and its territory at a slow pace, rediscovering streets and landscapes on a day dedicated to being together.
Squinzano in Bici is an annual event usually held on May 1st in Squinzano, in the province of Lecce. At the moment, the organizers have not yet published the dates and program for the 2026 edition.
Given the usual timing of the event, it is likely that in 2026 the ride will also take place on Labor Day, with a meeting point in Piazza Plebiscito. As soon as the Centro Radio C.B. Squinzano and the Civil Protection Volunteers release the official information, this page will be updated with times, routes, and participation details.
Every year on May 1st, in the morning, with a meeting time at 8:30 AM. In case of bad weather, the event may be postponed to the following days.
Meeting point and departure from Piazza Plebiscito, in the center of Squinzano (LE), Puglia. The route follows city streets.
Squinzano is served by the railway station on the Lecce-Brindisi line and is accessible by car via the SS16 Adriatica road. The town center is about 15 km from Lecce.
Event open to everyone, including families and children. A bicycle in good condition is all that is required. Helmets and comfortable clothing are recommended.
