The equinox celebration in the City of the Leopard
Spring Festival is the event with which the Municipality of Santa Margherita di Belìce, in the heart of the Agrigento province, celebrates the arrival of the warmer season. Timed to coincide with the spring equinox, the day transforms the town center into a vibrant trail of culture, traditions, flavors, and music, designed to engage residents and visitors of all ages. The initiative stems from the Municipal Administration's desire to highlight the territory's identity and offer an outdoor gathering space, celebrating the essence of Sicilian conviviality.
Santa Margherita di Belìce is known as the City of the Leopard: here stands the Palazzo Filangeri di Cutò, the residence where Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa spent part of his childhood and which inspired the Donnafugata palace in his famous novel. The complex, now home to the Literary Park and the Gattopardo Museum, provides the ideal backdrop for the festival. It is no coincidence that the celebrations kick off at Villa Gattopardo, with a narrative walk dedicated to the history and botanical heritage of the site, offering a chance to rediscover the gardens and the evocative atmosphere of the Leopard.
The program alternates between cultural and recreational moments throughout the day. The botanical walk is followed by a period costume parade, evoking the elegant atmosphere of local tradition, and a tasting of typical products from the area, showcasing the rich food and wine culture of the Terre Sicane. In the afternoon, the focus shifts to families with entertainment for children, while the evening is dedicated to live music along Via Libertà.
Spring Festival is made possible through the collaboration between the Municipality of Santa Margherita di Belìce, local associations, and the Union of Municipalities of the Terre Sicane, which supports the initiative as part of its regional promotion efforts. The event is part of a calendar of activities that bring the Agrigento town to life year-round, from the summer Gattopardo Festival to various food and wine events, helping to promote an authentic corner of Western Sicily, nestled between the Belìce Valley, vineyards, and local villages.
Those who choose to experience Spring Festival will find the essence of Santa Margherita di Belìce in a single day: the literary memory of the Leopard, the beauty of its landmarks, Sicilian gastronomy, and the warm hospitality of a community that opens its doors to visitors. It is an ideal occasion for a spring trip to discover the Agrigento hinterland.
The day opened at 11:00 AM at Villa Gattopardo with a narrative walk dedicated to the history and botanical heritage of the site, led by Prof. Giuseppe Barbera, a professor of Arboriculture. Following this, in the morning, an evocative period costume parade organized by the Imperial Dance association recreated the elegant atmosphere of local tradition.
At 12:30 PM, it was time for a tasting of typical products from the Terre Sicane region. In the afternoon, starting at 4:00 PM on Via Libertà, there was entertainment for children with inflatables and cotton candy provided by the Coro degli Angeli. The day concluded at 9:00 PM, also on Via Libertà, with a concert by the Five Drops dedicated to great Italian music.
The event, promoted by the Municipal Administration with the Councilor for Tourism Deborah Ciaccio and the support of the Union of Municipalities of the Terre Sicane, brought together local institutions and associations for a day of celebration with free admission.
Santa Margherita di Belìce is located in Western Sicily, in the province of Agrigento. By car, it can be reached via the SS 188 and the junctions of the A29 motorway (Palermo-Mazara del Vallo route), continuing towards the Belìce Valley. The nearest airports are Palermo Falcone-Borsellino and Trapani-Birgi.
The events are concentrated between Villa Gattopardo (Literary Park, starting point of the narrative walk) and Via Libertà, the heart of the town center, where entertainment and the evening concert are held.
The event is free and open to the public. For the updated program and schedules, we recommend checking the official channels of the Municipality of Santa Margherita di Belìce.
