About Terravecchia

Every September, the village of Terravecchia, the ancient heart of Pietramontecorvino in the Foggia Monti Dauni, travels back to the Middle Ages. For days, historical pageants, flag-wavers, musicians, and performers in period costumes parade through the stone alleys, while the euro is 'abolished' in favor of 'denari', the medieval currency used to pay along the food and wine trail. Re-enactments, fire shows, exhibitions, and conferences make this small Apulian town a capital of Italy's medieval villages.

Terravecchia, the village that returns to the Middle Ages

Sounds, Flavors and Colors of Terravecchia is the grand medieval re-enactment of Pietramontecorvino, a small town in the province of Foggia nestled in the Monti Dauni, in Apulia. The event takes place every year in September in the evocative ancient village of Terravecchia, the medieval core of the town, amidst stone-paved alleys, the Norman Tower, the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, and the Ducal Palace. With over thirty years of history, it is one of the most established and iconic events in the entire Daunia area.

A city rediscovering its roots

For a few days, Pietramontecorvino transforms into a true medieval settlement. The most anticipated moment is the Grand Historical Pageant, which crosses the town with dozens of performers in period costumes, ladies, knights, archers, flag-wavers, and musicians. The re-enactment retraces the historical events of the village, including the famous scene of the settlement of Jean Britaud, bringing back to life the atmospheres, crafts, and customs of a distant time.

The flavors of the food and wine trail

The beating heart of the festival is the food and wine trail set up through the alleys of Terravecchia. Here, to taste traditional Daunian dishes, the euro is symbolically 'abolished': you pay with denari, the medieval currency minted for the occasion, which visitors can exchange at dedicated booths. It is an original way to fully immerse yourself in the setting and to showcase the local products and cuisine of the area.

Shows, fire, and culture

The program combines entertainment and in-depth study: fire shows and fire-breathers, street artists, demonstrations of ancient crafts (ironworking, leatherworking, armor making), art exhibitions, and conferences with historians and medievalists. In recent editions, the event has also hosted lectio magistralis dedicated to the Middle Ages and the history of the Templars in Daunia, confirming the cultural vocation of the event beyond its festive and popular dimension.

A local event

The event is organized by the Pro Loco of Pietramontecorvino together with the Municipality, with the support of GAL Meridaunia as part of the enhancement of the villages of the Monti Dauni. Admission is free, and the re-enactment attracts thousands of visitors every year, helping to promote one of the most beautiful villages in inland Apulia, far from the most beaten tourist paths.
