About Sheep Festival

In the market area of Osteria Nuova, in Frasso Sabino, the local Pro Loco celebrates the flagship dish of the Sabina pastoral tradition every year. Gnocchi with castrato sauce, arrosticini, grilled mutton, and boiled mutton are served on long communal tables, accompanied by guided tours of the Grotta dei Massacci, food education workshops, and live music. A young but already popular festival that combines taste, nature, and community in the province of Rieti.

A festival born from the Sabina pastoral tradition

The Sheep Festival is one of the freshest and most successful food and wine events in the Rieti area. Established in 2024 by the Frasso Sabino Pro Loco Tourist Association, it has quickly become a landmark event for those looking to rediscover the pastoral cuisine of the Sabina Mountains, a gastronomic heritage built over centuries around transhumance and sheep farming.

The village of Frasso Sabino, a small town in the province of Rieti in Lazio, is located a short distance from Rome but retains a deeply rural atmosphere. The festival takes place in the Osteria Nuova market area, the most accessible part of the municipality, where large open spaces allow for kitchens, stalls, and long communal tables.

What to eat

The menu revolves entirely around sheep, prepared according to recipes passed down by Sabina families for generations. The most requested dishes are:

  • Gnocchi al castrato โ€” the signature dish of Rieti cuisine, served with a rich, slow-cooked sauce
  • Arrosticini โ€” traditional Apennine sheep meat skewers cooked over charcoal
  • Grilled mutton and boiled mutton, cooked using the most ancient methods
  • Pecora aju cutturu, a slow-cooked stew typical of the Sabina-Abruzzo area
  • Beer, chips, and local wines to accompany the main courses

The format is based on communal tables: you eat elbow-to-elbow with other visitors in an informal atmosphere that is an integral part of the experience. Given the high turnout, booking is highly recommended, especially for lunch.

Beyond the table: nature, culture, and music

The Pro Loco has built a program of activities around the gastronomic offering that highlights the local area. The most appreciated moment is the guided tour of the Grotta dei Massacci, a natural cavity near the village, offered for free in collaboration with local organizations. There are also food education workshops organized with the Monti Lucretili Regional Natural Park and, in some editions, live cheese-making demonstrations showing how sheep's milk is processed.

The soundtrack changes from year to year: from traditional folk Stornellatori to the 90s and 2000s DJ sets of the Sheep Beats โ€” Morning Club format, and even late-afternoon rock concerts. It is a deliberate choice: to bring together both younger audiences and local families.

An opportunity to discover Sabina

Those who arrive for the festival find a territory still largely untouched by mass tourism. The village of Frasso Sabino is worth a stroll, as are the surrounding hills, dotted with olive groves and hiking trails. The area is also known for its Astronomical Observatory and its proximity to the Monti Lucretili Park, which offers trails for all skill levels.

The Sheep Festival is thus confirmed as more than just a dining appointment: it is the way a small but active community tells its own story, blending shepherding, landscape, and the joy of being together.

Sheep Festival โ€” edition 2026

The third edition of the Sheep Festival took place on Saturday, April 11 and Sunday, April 12, 2026, in the Osteria Nuova market area, in Frasso Sabino. Two days marked by the Sheep Beats โ€” Morning Club format, with 90s DJ sets, AperiPecora, the great communal PecoRANZO lunches, the Mutere rock concert, and, on Sunday, the visit to the Grotta dei Massacci and the food education workshop.

Third edition: the festival changes pace

With the 2026 edition, the Sheep Festival in Frasso Sabino expanded its format, spreading the gastronomic and cultural parts over two full days โ€” Saturday, April 11 and Sunday, April 12. The most visible novelty was the introduction of Sheep Beats โ€” Morning Club, a morning musical aperitif with DJ sets dedicated to the 90s and 2000s, designed to attract a younger audience without distorting the festival.

Saturday, dubbed PECORAduno, opened at 10 am with music and the grill already lit, continuing with the AperiPecora at 11 am and the PecoRANZO at noon, served on the usual long communal tables. From 5 pm, the stage switched to live rock with Mutere.

Sunday, dedicated to PECORAnza, had a more naturalistic focus: at 10 am, the free guided tour of the Grotta dei Massacci, at 11 am the food education workshop created with the Monti Lucretili Regional Natural Park, followed again by AperiPecora and PecoRANZO. In the kitchen, as always, gnocchi with castrato sauce, arrosticini, grilled mutton, and stewed mutton.
