Christmas in Battipaglia with markets, illuminations, and the Santa Claus Village
Serre d'Inverno - Christmas Magic is the major holiday festival in Battipaglia, a city in the Piana del Sele area in the province of Salerno, Campania. Established in the mid-2010s by a committee of volunteers and grown into the official holiday program promoted by the Municipality of Battipaglia, the event occupies the urban heart of the city from the Immaculate Conception to Epiphany, transforming squares and shopping streets into a continuous path of lights, wooden stalls, and performances.
The name refers to serre (greenhouses), a symbol of Battipaglia's agricultural economy: the Piana del Sele is one of Italy's most important horticultural districts, and the festival plays on the contrast between the greenhouses of the countryside and the "winter greenhouses" set up in the square as urban lounges for the cold season.
The heart of the event is the Christmas market circuit, spread along the axis connecting Piazza Aldo Moro, Piazza Amendola, Via Italia, and Via Matteotti. The wooden stalls host:
The stalls remain open daily until evening, with extended hours on weekends and holidays: this is when the center fills with families and visitors from neighboring towns.
Piazza Amendola is traditionally the space dedicated to children, featuring the Santa Claus Village: Santa's house, the letter mailbox, inflatable games, a sleigh for photos, and, in some editions, an ice skating rink. Surrounding the village are creative workshops, entertainment, mascots, and street artists who accompany the weekends of December leading up to the Befana.
Alongside the markets, Serre d'Inverno offers a program of live music, theater, dance, and choirs built in collaboration with local associations. The squares host evening concerts, DJ sets, dance school recitals, and band performances; the Natale di Notte (Christmas by Night) format has brought the most crowded musical evenings in recent years, with events dedicated to 90s dance music and the Italian urban scene. There is also no shortage of charity initiatives, nativity scenes, and parish activities.
The festival is promoted and funded by the Municipality, which allocates funds every year for lights, installations, and shows, and publishes a call for associations, committees, and operators interested in proposing events. The schedule, however, does not only concern the center: a portion of the resources is allocated to the outlying districts and neighborhoods โ Taverna, Sant'Anna, Aversana, Belvedere, Serroni, and Stella โ so that these areas also have their moment of celebration.
Serre d'Inverno is not an alpine market transplanted to the South: it is the Christmas of an agricultural and commercial city in Southern Italy, with its cuisine, its bands, popular devotion, and a square that stays alive until late. For those visiting Campania in winter, Battipaglia is also a convenient base: Salerno, Paestum, the Amalfi Coast, and Cilento are all within easy reach, and the city is easily accessible by train.
The Christmas festival of Battipaglia returned from December 8, 2025, to January 11, 2026, a full month of lights, markets, and shows in the center of the Salerno city. The City Council had approved in November the allocation for the holiday events: approximately 60,000 euros destined for the city center and 14,000 euros for the peripheral areas, with a specific quota for the Taverna, Sant'Anna, Aversana, Belvedere, Serroni, and Stella neighborhoods.
The market stalls occupied Piazza Amendola, Via Italia, and Piazza Aldo Moro, with crafts, traditional products, Christmas sweets, and street food; the Santa Claus Village returned to Piazza Amendola with attractions and entertainment for families. The musical evenings, gathered under the brand Natale di Notte by Serre d'Inverno, attracted the largest crowds.
As every year, the Municipality adopted for the holiday period the ordinance prohibiting the takeaway sale of drinks in glass containers in the center and in the areas affected by the events, from Piazza Aldo Moro to Piazza Amendola up to Via Mazzini and the surrounding streets.
The calendar was completed by initiatives spread across the districts and peripheral neighborhoods, financed with the fund dedicated to areas outside the center.
By train: Battipaglia station is a hub on the Tyrrhenian line between Salerno and Reggio Calabria and the route to Potenza and Taranto; from the station, Piazza Aldo Moro and the center can be reached on foot in a few minutes.
By car: Take the Battipaglia exit on the A2 del Mediterraneo motorway, then follow signs for the center; alternatively, take the SS18 Tirrena Inferiore. On evenings with high attendance, the center is partially closed to traffic: it is advisable to leave the car in peripheral parking lots and continue on foot.
By plane: Salerno-Costa d'Amalfi Airport (Pontecagnano) is about twenty kilometers away; alternatively, use Naples-Capodichino.
Access to the markets, illuminations, and performances in the square is free. Only individual attractions in the children's village (inflatable games, rides, ice rink when present) and, of course, purchases at the stalls are paid.
