The Valsesia Carnival featuring masked parades, a night tour, and the traditional Paniccia
The Scopa Carnival is one of the most beloved winter events in Upper Valsesia, located in the town of Scopa, in the province of Vercelli, Piedmont. Far from the grand, famous carnivals, it maintains the authentic spirit of a true village celebration: masks, joy, conviviality, and a strong focus on local culinary traditions. It is an event that involves the entire community and attracts visitors from neighboring towns in the valley.
The most evocative moment of the festival is the masked night tour, which kicks off in the evening from the Church Square (Piazza della Chiesa). Both adults and children in costume parade through the illuminated streets of the village, creating a joyful procession that winds through the center of Scopa. It is an event that unites different generations and represents the most genuine soul of the Valsesian Carnival, where the celebration stems from the spontaneous participation of the residents.
On Shrove Tuesday, the Scopa Carnival reaches its peak with the distribution of Paniccia, the iconic dish of the Carnival in Valsesia. It is a hearty meal, slow-cooked in large cauldrons by volunteers according to recipes that vary from village to village along the valley. The tradition of Valsesian panicce is rooted in ancient acts of solidarity toward the needy and has evolved over time into a festive occasion for the entire community to gather. In Scopa, the distribution of Paniccia is the convivial heart of the day.
The Scopa Carnival reserves a special space for the little ones: on the afternoon of Shrove Tuesday, a children's party is held at the Campeggio ai Dinelli, a historic venue nestled in the greenery of Scopa, which has been active for over forty years in the heart of Valsesia. With confetti, masks, and snacks, children are the true stars of this afternoon dedicated to fun.
Part of the rich calendar of the Valsesian Carnival, which animates numerous towns in the valley every year until Ash Wednesday, the Scopa Carnival is the ideal opportunity to discover an authentic corner of the Piedmontese mountains. Between popular traditions, typical gastronomy, and the hospitality of the local community, the event offers a genuine experience, far from the crowds of large events and perfectly suited for families.
