The traditional Carnival parade in the heart of Schlanders, Vinschgau Valley
The Schlonderser Foschingsumzug is the historic Carnival (Fasching) parade of Schlanders, the main town of the Vinschgau (Val Venosta) region in the province of Bolzano, South Tyrol. The event takes place biennially during the Carnival season, transforming the historic center and the pedestrian zone into a lively open-air stage.
The South Tyrolean Fasching has ancient roots and a distinctly popular character. In Schlanders, the parade brings together numerous groups of all ages—some loud, some quiet, some motorized, some on foot—all united by a shared sense of humor and fun. The parade is primarily driven by local associations, which spend each edition crafting colorful floats, elaborate costumes, and ironic performances that poke fun at local events and current affairs.
The procession starts at the Kulturhaus Karl Schönherr, the town's cultural center, continues past the fire station and the hospital, and concludes in the pedestrian zone, where the festivities continue with music, masks, and stalls. Those wishing to participate with their own group or float must register in advance with the organizers.
For those visiting South Tyrol in winter, the Schlanders Foschingsumzug is an authentic way to experience the Tyrolean Carnival away from the major tourist crowds. It is a genuine, family-friendly, and free event that showcases the community spirit of the Vinschgau Valley and the vitality of its local associations. The event is organized by Marketing Schlanders on behalf of the Municipality of Schlanders.
