About Sassinoro Carnival

The Sassinoro Carnival, also known as "Sassinoro and its Masks," is one of the most vibrant folk traditions in the Sannio area of Benevento. On the last Sunday of Carnival, the small town of Sassinoro transforms into an open-air theater: the masked procession starts from the Simeoni district and winds through all the town's neighborhoods, accompanied by the local marching band. The historic masksโ€”The Months, The Coppersmiths, The Flower Sellers of Florence, The Slaves of Turkey, and The Farewell to Carnivalโ€”perform songs, rhymes, and amorous skirmishes passed down through generations.

A traditional Carnival in the heart of Sannio

In Sassinoro, the smallest municipality of the Titerno Alto Tammaro Mountain Community with fewer than a thousand inhabitants, Carnival is not just any festival: it is the defining cultural event of the year. In this corner of the province of Benevento, on the border between Campania and Molise, the event is known as "Sassinoro and its Masks" and preserves a repertoire of folk performances that have been lost elsewhere. There are no papier-mรขchรฉ floats or massive stage sets here; instead, local residents, wearing handmade costumes and reciting lines learned by heart, bring the peasant theater of previous generations to life.

The historic masks of Sassinoro

The heritage of Sassinoro's masks consists of five traditional performances, which rotate or appear together during the procession on the last Sunday of Carnival:

  • The Months โ€” the twelve months of the year portrayed by men on horseback in traditional attire, each reciting their own verse in turn;
  • The Coppersmiths โ€” a courtship song between the itinerant coppersmiths of Basilicata and the local village girls;
  • The Flower Sellers of Florence โ€” an encounter between local young women and Florentine flower merchants, filled with double entendres and the gallant language of roses and lilies of the valley;
  • The Slaves of Turkey โ€” a dramatic reenactment of the return from slavery, an ancient memory of coastal raids;
  • The Farewell to Carnival โ€” the final duet between Carnival and Lent, a sung farewell to the season of freedom.

Alongside these, the ever-present Pulcinella appears, bringing the satirical and irreverent wit of the Neapolitan mask to the procession and keeping the banter with the audience alive.

The Carnival Announcement, on the night of January 16th-17th

The Sassinoro Carnival season begins long before the final Sunday. On the night of January 16th to 17th, the Carnival Announcement takes place: a procession of hooded figures, armed with cowbells, walks through the town streets reciting traditional rhymes to announce that Carnival has begun. It is a deeply evocative nocturnal ritual, linked to the agro-pastoral calendar and the feast of Saint Anthony the Abbot, which places Sassinoro among the archaic carnivals of the central-southern Apennines.

The procession through the districts

On the day of the festival, the group gathers in Simeoni district and moves toward the town center. The procession does not follow a single route; it travels through the streets and stops to perform in every district, ensuring that every part of the town can witness the show right outside their homes. The performers are accompanied by the Sassinoro Marching Band, and the event is organized by the Pro Loco Sassinoro in collaboration with the municipal administration and the local music association. In case of rain, the performance goes on: it moves indoors to the municipal gym.

A town that becomes a stage

Visitors from outside will find a Carnival without tourist filters: the audience is largely made up of local families and emigrants returning for the occasion, the costumes are meticulously crafted but artisanal, the texts are in dialect, and the jokes are improvised on the spot. It is also a day of exchange with neighboring towns: the Sassinoro masks regularly participate in parades in Morcone and other communities of the Alto Tammaro, in a network of reciprocity that holds the area's Carnival calendar together.

Why it is worth attending

The Sassinoro Carnival offers in a few hours what would require a museum elsewhere: an oral repertoire still being performed, a village band, and the landscape of the Sannio Apennines as a backdrop. For those visiting inland Campania, it is an opportunity to discover a lesser-known side of the region, far from the Gulf of Naples, where folk traditions survive because the community continues to practice them. The day can easily be combined with a walk through the village, a visit to the 1728 Church of San Michele Arcangelo, and a gastronomic stop in Sannio, a land of excellent wines and rustic cuisine.

Sassinoro Carnival โ€” edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Sassinoro Carnival took place on Sunday, February 15, featuring the performance of "The Flower Sellers of Florence" as the main event, with Pulcinella bringing the satirical spirit of the Neapolitan tradition. The procession started at 3:00 PM from the Simeoni district and traveled through the streets of Sassinoro accompanied by the local marching band, with meticulously crafted costumes inspired by the historic figure of the Florentine flower sellers. Organized by Pro Loco Sassinoro in collaboration with the Municipality and the local music association.

Sassinoro Carnival 2026: The Flower Sellers of Florence

The 2026 Carnival of Sassinoro, in the province of Benevento, featured "The Flower Sellers of Florence", one of the historic masks of the local repertoire: the performance evokes the local young women fascinated by Florentine flower merchants, skilled at winning them over with roses and fragrant lilies of the valley, in a courtship game built entirely on double entendres. Alongside the flower sellers, the figures of Pulcinella paraded with their comic and irreverent style.

The meeting point and start of the procession were set for 3:00 PM in the Simeoni district, with a route along the town streets following the Sassinoro Marching Band. The parade was distinguished by the care taken with the costumes, created by drawing inspiration from the historic figure of the Florentine flower sellers. In case of rain and bad weather, the performance was scheduled to take place indoors, in the municipal gym starting at 4:00 PM.

The initiative was organized by the Pro Loco Sassinoro in collaboration with the municipal administration and the local music association, with the aim of promoting the town's Carnival tradition: a final burst of joy before the restrictions of Lent.
