Float parades, costumes, and Ciociaria flavors in the village of Santopadre
After a few years of silence, the Santopadre Carnival is back to color the streets of the village. The Municipality of Santopadre, in collaboration with the Pro Loco, has restored one of the most heartfelt community gatherings of the year: the float parade, which has long been a symbol of unity and tradition for the entire town. The 2026 edition, held on Sunday, February 22, marked a long-awaited restart for both young and old, bringing music, confetti, and joy back to the town square.
The heart of the event is the parade, which kicks off at 12:30 PM and winds through the town center. The stars of the day are the elaborate floats arriving from other territories, crafted with great creativity and spectacle. These colorful, scenic structures bring the village to life, engaging the public along the entire route with costumes, music, and dancing. It is the highlight for children, though adults are just as quick to catch the festive spirit.
Alongside the floats, the program features a "best costume" contest, open to children, teenagers, and adults. It is the perfect opportunity to show off outfits and disguises prepared with family or friends; the jury rewards creativity, originality, and attention to detail, in the true spirit of Carnival.
As per tradition, the festivities are accompanied by food stalls offering typical products and local specialties. Ciociaria is a land of genuine flavors—cured meats, cheeses, Carnival sweets, and local wines—and the parade day becomes a mini-tour of taste among the stalls, perfect for rounding off a Sunday lunch.
Santopadre is a small town of just over a thousand inhabitants in the province of Frosinone, in southern Lazio. It sits on a hill overlooking the middle Liri Valley, between Arpino and Roccasecca. The town owes its name to the devotion to San Folco, the "holy father" (santo padre) venerated as the patron saint and celebrated every year in May. The Carnival is part of a calendar of events that also includes the Spring Festival with the Wild Asparagus Festival and "TartufiAmo," the summer event dedicated to black truffles.
More than just a major tourist event, the Santopadre Carnival is a community celebration: access to the village streets is free, the atmosphere is familiar and genuine, and the day is the ideal opportunity to discover an authentic Ciociaria village off the beaten path. Visitors from outside the area can combine the parade with a stroll through the historic center and a delicious stop at the food stalls.
Organized by the Municipality of Santopadre in collaboration with the Pro Loco, the 2026 edition restored one of the most beloved community celebrations, which had been on hold for several years. The floats, crafted with great creativity and spectacle, brought the village streets to life, engaging both young and old in an afternoon of music, color, and costumes.
The Sunday program combined the parade with the "best costume" contest, featuring categories for children, teenagers, and adults, as well as food stalls where visitors could taste typical Ciociaria products. It was a day with free admission, designed as a symbol of unity and tradition for the entire town.
