A festival named after the patron saint

The Santo Eusanio Celebrations take place every year on July 9th in Sant'Eusanio del Sangro, a hillside town in the Province of Chieti, Abruzzo, overlooking the Sangro River valley. The event is dedicated to Santo Eusanio the Martyr, whose liturgical feast day falls on this date. According to tradition, the saint died on this day, and the village, which grew around an ancient sanctuary dedicated to him in an area then known as Monteclo, took his name. It is one of the town's two major religious festivals, distinct from the feast of the patron saint San Filippo Neri, celebrated in May.

Religious rites and popular festivities

The day perfectly balances devotional moments with community celebration. Liturgical services and a procession through the historic center are followed in the evening by a rich entertainment program in the town square, featuring festive illuminations, a stage for performances, and food and wine stalls. Over the years, the July 9th evening has hosted concerts by popular Italian musicians and dance events that attract residents and visitors from neighboring towns in the Sangro Valley.

Organization

The festivities are managed by the San Filippo Neri Festival Committee, a volunteer association that also oversees other events in the town's calendar. The committee coordinates the secular aspects of the festival, from performances to catering, in collaboration with the local parish and the Municipality of Sant'Eusanio del Sangro.

Sant'Eusanio del Sangro and its traditions

A small town of just over two thousand inhabitants, Sant'Eusanio del Sangro maintains a strong bond with its traditional festivals. Beyond the July event, the town's calendar includes the patronal feast of San Filippo Neri in May and the evocative Fuochi dell'Immacolata (Bonfires of the Immaculate Conception) on the eve of December 8th, with large bonfires lit in honor of the Conception. However, the Santo Eusanio festival remains the most cherished summer event, serving as a gathering point for the entire community.
