The most cherished festival in Isola del Liri, featuring centuries-old devotion, free concerts, and fireworks over the Liri river.
The Santissimo Crocifisso Festival is the oldest and most deeply felt celebration in Isola del Liri, a town in the province of Frosinone, in the heart of the Ciociaria region and the Lazio Region. Tradition sets the date around the second Sunday of July, when the entire town—nestled between the two branches of the river and its famous urban waterfalls—gathers around its most cherished icon.
The legend of its origin is one of the most evocative in southern Lazio: during one of the many floods of the Liri, a willow trunk was reportedly carried by the current to the town. The citizens decided to carve it into a crucifix for the church, and according to the story passed down through generations, blood flowed from the wood during the carving. Since then, the image has been considered miraculous.
The Church of the SS. Crocifisso, built around 1410, was the city's oldest. The earthquake of January 13, 1915, which devastated the Marsica region and much of the valley, razed it to the ground: popular memory holds that the Crucifix remained unharmed, standing upright amidst the rubble. Today, the icon is kept in a side altar, veiled by a red cloth according to ancient custom, and is unveiled only on specific occasions—Good Friday and the Thursday preceding the festival.
It is on that very Thursday that the Crucifix is carried in procession to the Parish Church of San Lorenzo Martire, where it remains exposed for the adoration of the faithful throughout the festivities. The processions, led by confraternities and accompanied by a brass band, remain the most intense moment of the festival: the night procession, in particular, with the town illuminated and the sound of the waterfalls in the background, is an experience worth the trip alone.
Alongside the religious celebrations, a secular program of great appeal has consolidated over the years, organized by the Santissimo Crocifisso Festival Committee with the support of regional institutions and local businesses. Five consecutive nights of live music, all with free entry, attracting thousands of people from the neighboring towns of the Liri valley and the Sora area.
Few centers in Italy can boast a waterfall in their historic center: the Cascata Grande plunges about 27 meters right below the Castello Boncompagni-Viscogliosi, and the Cascata del Valcatoio completes the scenery. Watching the fireworks or the night procession with this natural backdrop is what makes the Isola festival different from any other patronal feast in Lazio.
The festival is also the best opportunity to discover the Ciociaria region in summer: nearby Sora, the Abbey of Casamari, the valley villages, and a mountain and river cuisine that spills out into the streets on July evenings. Those who arrive for the concert gladly stay for the rest.
The festivities are concentrated over five days, from Thursday to Monday around the second Sunday of July. We recommend not limiting yourself to the main concert evening: the religious part—the unveiling of the icon, the processions, the band—is the true heart of the event and captures the sense of a community that has identified with its Crucifix for centuries.
The 2026 edition of the Santissimo Crocifisso Festival took place in Isola del Liri from July 9 to 13, 2026, with five consecutive nights of live music with free entry and the usual religious program organized by the parish community.
The Santissimo Crocifisso Festival Committee, with the support of Lazio Region institutions and local businesses, created a program designed to hold together "a tradition that unites faith, identity, and community." The main stage was in Piazza Boncompagni, with the exception of the final evening hosted in Piazza SS. Triade.
The most anticipated moments were the "Canta Napoli 3.0" concert event on Sunday, July 12, followed at 11:00 PM by the fireworks display, and the grand finale on Monday, July 13, with Irene Grandi, on tour with "Fiera di Me 2026".
50 Special — 9:30 PM, Piazza Boncompagni. Opening night of the festivities.
Scirockati — Piazza Boncompagni.
Nord Sud Ovest Band — Piazza Boncompagni, tribute to Italian music.
"Canta Napoli 3.0" — 9:30 PM, Piazza Boncompagni, free entry. Concert event dedicated to the classics of Neapolitan song in modern arrangements, with Micky Sepalone and Angela Piaf, musical direction by maestro Giuseppe Fabrizio. Following this, at 11:00 PM, fireworks display.
Irene Grandi — 9:00 PM, Piazza SS. Triade. The Florentine singer-songwriter in concert with the "Fiera di Me 2026" tour.
Solemn procession in honor of the Santissimo Crocifisso accompanied by the "Città di Ailano" band, with the celebration of Holy Mass around 8:00 PM in Piazza Boncompagni. The icon remains exposed in the Parish Church of San Lorenzo Martire for the adoration of the faithful.
By car: A1 Rome-Naples motorway, exit at Ferentino or Frosinone, then the Sora-Frosinone highway to Isola del Liri (about 110 km from Rome). By train: Isola del Liri station on the Roccasecca-Avezzano line, or Frosinone station with a bus connection. By plane: Rome Ciampino and Fiumicino airports.
All evening concerts have free and open admission. Food and drinks at the Liri Street Food stands are for purchase.
On festival evenings, the historic center is closed to traffic with dedicated municipal ordinances: it is best to leave your car in the peripheral parking lots and continue on foot. For the closing concert, we recommend arriving at least an hour early to find a spot in the square. Food stands remain open until late at night. Accommodation is available in Isola del Liri and nearby Sora: in July, it is better to book in advance.
