The seaside village of Porto Ercole celebrates its patron saint with a blend of maritime heritage, faith, and tradition
Every year, between late May and early June, the picturesque village of Porto Ercoleโa hamlet within the municipality of Monte Argentario in the province of Grossetoโcelebrates its patron saint with the Sant'Erasmo Festival. It is one of the most cherished events in the entire Tuscan Maremma, a time when the village's maritime identity shines through a mix of faith, sporting challenges, and community spirit.
A bishop and martyr venerated since ancient times, Sant'Erasmoโalso known as Saint Elmoโhas been the protector of seafaring folk for centuries, invoked by sailors during their voyages and through storms. His feast day falls on June 2nd, the day the community of Porto Ercole pays homage to the saint who has always watched over fishermen and navigators. This devotion is deeply rooted in the village's long maritime history, nestled between the harbor and the imposing Spanish fortresses that overlook the bay.
The festival program alternates between religious ceremonies, sporting competitions, and evening entertainment. Key highlights include:
The most emotional moment is undoubtedly the sea procession on June 2nd. Following a solemn Mass celebrated by the Bishop, the relic of Sant'Erasmo is carried through the narrow alleys of the old town down to the harbor. There, the bust of the saint is placed aboard a fishing boat adorned with flowers and lights. Dozens of vessels join the procession; once out at sea, they form a wide circle and cast wreaths of flowers into the water in memory of lost sailors. The return to port is marked by the sounding of sirens and a breathtaking fireworks display that illuminates the sky and the waters of the Argentario.
Organized by the Pro Loco of Porto Ercole with the patronage of the Municipality of Monte Argentario, the Sant'Erasmo Festival is the perfect opportunity to discover one of the most charming villages on the Tuscan coast, with its Spanish fortresses, seafood restaurants, and the authentic atmosphere of a community that lives by and for the sea. A free event that brings residents and visitors together for unforgettable days of celebration.
The 2026 edition of the Sant'Erasmo Festival in Porto Ercole, organized by the Pro Loco with the patronage of the Municipality of Monte Argentario, took place from May 28th to June 2nd with an intense schedule of music, sports, and maritime traditions. Highlights included a concert by RON in Piazza Roma and the 50th edition of the historic Scarpinata dei IV Forti Spagnoli, culminating in the grand finale on June 2nd with the sea procession and a pyrotechnic show.
Porto Ercole can be reached by car via the Aurelia (SS1) highway, taking the Orbetello-Porto Santo Stefano exit and continuing along the SP161 towards Monte Argentario. The nearest train station is Orbetello-Monte Argentario, which is connected to Porto Ercole by local buses. The nearest airports are Rome Fiumicino and Pisa.
The festival takes place in late May, culminating on June 2nd, the liturgical feast day of the patron saint.
Admission to all events is free.
The village is very busy during the festival days: we recommend arriving early and parking in areas outside the historic center. For the sea procession and the fireworks on June 2nd, the best viewing spots are the seafront promenade and the harbor pier.
