The tradition of Saint Anthony Abbot and the charrasco in Pescosansonesco
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the small municipality of Pescosansonesco, nestled in the mountains of the province of Pescara, in Abruzzo, the feast of Saint Anthony Abbot has recently evolved into a true festival dedicated to the Santantonieri. Established in memory of Alessandro, the event brings the local historic group to Piazza Italia, in the heart of Pescosansonesco Nuovo, to showcase a musical tradition passed down for generations.
The heart of the festival is the charrasco, called "sceta vaiasse" (literally "cow awakener") in the local dialect: a percussion idiophone of ancient origins, which the Santantonieri play while going from house to house in the traditional quest. This ritual, still alive in Pescosansonesco, accompanies the folk songs and music used to celebrate the Saint's history in exchange for gifts, food, and hospitality offered by the village families.
In keeping with the Abruzzese tradition linked to Saint Anthony Abbot, protector of animals and the hearth, the day combines religious and popular elements: Holy Mass in the village church, the blessing of the animals in the square, and the opening of food stalls and craft markets. The square is set up with gazebos, tables, benches, and fire pits to welcome residents and visitors in an atmosphere of celebration, spirituality, and sharing.
The Santantonieri Festival is much more than a winter fair: it is an opportunity to rediscover the intangible heritage of a small village in the Abruzzo hinterland, where ancient sounds, rites, and flavors resist the passage of time. Those visiting Pescosansonesco on this occasion will experience the authentic atmosphere of village festivals, where the community gathers around its roots to keep them alive for future generations.
The Santantonieri Festival returns to Pescosansonesco to renew the tradition of Saint Anthony Abbot. As of the publication date, the official calendar for the 2026 edition has not yet been released. As is customary, the traditional house-to-house tour by the Santantonieri with the charrasco, the blessing of the animals, and convivial moments in Piazza Italia are expected. For updated dates and programs, please follow the channels of the Municipality of Pescosansonesco.
