The Ferragosto celebrations in the small village of Vestea, featuring devotion to the Madonna, the return of emigrants, and a traditional pasta and bean festival.
Every year around August 15th, the small village of Vestea—home to just over sixty residents perched on a ridge at an altitude of about 565 meters—experiences its most intense moment with the Feast of the Madonna dell'Assunta. Vestea is part of the municipality of Civitella Casanova, in the Province of Pescara, in the heart of the Vestina area, on the edge of the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park. During these days, the village, which remains quiet for most of the year, transforms and rediscovers its most authentic soul.
The event is also known as the Emigrant's Feast: Ferragosto is the time when many Vestea natives who moved away over the decades return to the village, unlock the doors of their ancestral homes, and repopulate the streets and the small square for a few days. It is a celebration of returns and reunions, where families gather and the dispersed community reconnects through Marian devotion and shared meals.
The religious heart of the festival is dedicated to the Madonna dell'Assunta, celebrated on August 15th, with rites and a procession marking the Ferragosto calendar between August 14th and 16th. The village parish church is dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel; just outside the village, on the ancient road towards Penne, lies the chapel of the Madonna delle Grazie, dating back to 1779.
Alongside the religious services, the festival features its most anticipated culinary event: the festival of pasta and beans with pork ribs, deeply rooted in Abruzzese peasant tradition. The signature dish is a soup of handmade pasta and beans—known as tajarille e fasciule—served alongside grilled pork ribs. It is simple, hearty fare that tells the story of the culinary heritage of the Pescara hinterland, bringing together residents, emigrants, and visitors every summer.
In the second half of August, the small square known as La Torre—named for its nearly circular shape, which is said to resemble the foundations of an ancient Apennine watchtower—hosts performances of Abruzzese dialect theater. Local troupes stage vernacular comedies that entertain the audience while preserving the local language and popular wit of the area.
The Feast of the Madonna dell'Assunta in Vestea is a small-town Ferragosto, far from the crowds of major events but precious for its authenticity. Those who experience it discover the hospitality of inland Abruzzo, the genuine flavors of the Pescara province, and the deep bond between a village and its children scattered across the world, who return home every summer.
Vestea is a hamlet of Civitella Casanova, in the Province of Pescara. By car, it can be reached from the Pescara-Villanova (A14) motorway exit or from Pescara-Chieti, continuing inland along the Val Pescara and climbing towards the Vestina area. The reference train station is Pescara Centrale, from where you can continue by car.
The festival is centered around Ferragosto, from August 14th to 16th, with the main event on August 15th, the day of the Assumption and the Emigrant's Feast.
The village is small: we recommend arriving early for the food festival and wearing comfortable shoes for the uphill streets. For updated information on dates and the program, it is best to contact the Municipality of Civitella Casanova (tel. +39 085 846158).
