The patronal feast of Pomaro Monferrato in Piazza della Libertà
The Santa Sabina Festival is the main event in Pomaro Monferrato, a small town in the province of Alessandria nestled in the hills of the Lower Monferrato, in Piedmont. Dedicated to the town's patron saint, the festival takes place every year on August 29th in Piazza della Libertà, the heart of the village, and has for generations been the moment when the entire community gathers to honor its roots.
Santa Sabina is venerated in Pomaro Monferrato for her faith and her example of Christian virtues. The town's parish church has a unique feature: it is the only one in the entire Monferrato region dedicated to Santa Sabina. Inside, it houses historical treasures, including a Romanesque bell tower and a wooden fragment believed to be part of Jesus' crown of thorns, brought from Venice to Pomaro. The religious dimension of the festival remains the guiding thread of the day, around which the more convivial and popular aspects have developed over time.
Alongside the devotional aspect, the festival is above all an occasion for conviviality. The local Pro Loco enlivens the day with its culinary offerings, which highlight the typical flavors of the Monferrato territory, and with music and dancing that accompany locals and visitors alike. Over the years, traditional dance floors have given way to more modern stages for musical performances, but the spirit remains the same: an entire village celebrating in a simple and welcoming atmosphere.
Visiting Pomaro Monferrato during the festival also means discovering a village with medieval roots, once a frontier post between the Marquisate of Monferrato and the Duchy of Milan. The town, marked by sieges and reconstructions over the centuries, retains the quiet charm of the small centers of the Alessandria hills, far from mass tourism. The Santa Sabina Festival is the best way to experience it on its most vibrant day.
