The patronal feast of Bisacquino in honor of the Santuzza
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In Bisacquino, a small municipality in the Province of Palermo perched at an altitude of 744 meters in the heart of inland Sicily, Santa Rosalia has been the patron saint venerated for generations. The cult of the Santuzza has its roots in 1626, when a relic of the saint arrived in the town and was kept in the mother church. The people of Bisacquino invoked their protector during the most dramatic times, particularly during the plagues that struck the town in 1744, 1837, and 1880: from those vows, a devotion was born and strengthened that still animates the community today.
The festival is celebrated on September 4th, a date that Sicilian tradition dedicates to Santa Rosalia. The most anticipated moment is the procession of the statue of the saint, carried on shoulders through the streets of the village amidst the devout participation of the inhabitants. The celebrations are centered around the Mother Church of San Giovanni Battista, an 18th-century building whose Baroque facade features statues of Santa Rosalia, the town's patron, and San Giovanni Battista, the church's namesake. Inside, among the stuccoes of the Serpotta school, a wooden sculpture of the Santuzza is also preserved.
The Santa Rosalia festival is part of a rich calendar of events that mark the town's year: from the Carnival with the dominรฒ mask to the Feast of Saint Joseph in March, from Holy Week to the Feast of the Madonna del Balzo in August at the sanctuary of the same name. Visiting Bisacquino during the patronal festivities means discovering an authentic village in inland Sicily, its churches, the Civic Museum, and the famous Clock Museum.
More than a spectacular event, the Santa Rosalia festival is a moment of strong cohesion for Bisacquino: an occasion where popular faith, historical memory, and local identity merge in the square and along the streets of the center. Visitors from outside will find the warm welcome of a town that proudly guards its religious traditions.
The 2026 Santa Rosalia Festival in Bisacquino will be held according to tradition around September 4th, the day dedicated to the patron saint. At the moment, the dates and the official program for the 2026 edition have not yet been published.
As every year, the central moment will be the procession of the statue of the saint along the streets of the town, preceded by religious rites in the Mother Church of San Giovanni Battista. Details on times, celebrations, and festive moments will be announced closer to the event.
