In the heart of Ciociaria, the Fiura district of Alatri (Frosinone province, Lazio) dedicates an entire week each summer to its patron saint, Santa Maria della Mercede. Organized by the local parish community, this festival is one of the neighborhood's most cherished events: a blend of religious devotion and popular celebration that brings together families, seniors, and youth in an atmosphere of authentic conviviality.
The program spans several evenings, hosted in the district's outdoor spaces. Each night offers something different: folk groups, dance orchestras, duos, and pop bands take the stage, while social gatherings enliven the neighborhood streets until late. A highlight is the traditional seniors' dinner, a gesture of respect for the history and community of Fiura.
The 2025 edition, held from August 17th to 24th, featured performances by the folk group "Aria di Casa Nostra," Penta Folk, the "Only Two" duo, and numerous local musical ensembles, showcasing the deep roots of folklore in the Ciociaria territory.
Alongside the festive atmosphere, the religious significance remains central. Weekday evening masses are held throughout the week; the final Sunday culminates in a solemn procession through the district streets, led by the Alatri City Band, followed by a traditional fireworks display that lights up the Fiura sky. The following day, a mass is celebrated in memory of the district's deceased.
Alatri, famous for its imposing Acropolis with megalithic (or "cyclopean") walls, is one of the most evocative art cities in southern Lazio. District festivals like the one in Fiura reveal the intimate soul of the town: a community that keeps its religious and popular traditions alive throughout the summer, neighborhood by neighborhood.
Bridging the sacred and the secular, the Fiura festival is above all a moment of connection. The musical evenings attract residents and visitors from neighboring towns, children enjoy games and performances, and the elderly are honored with a dedicated dinner: a model of local village celebration that, in Alatri, is renewed from generation to generation.
Alatri can be reached by car via the A1 motorway (Frosinone exit), then following provincial roads toward Alatri. The Fiura district is located near the town center. By train, the reference station is Frosinone, which is connected to Alatri by local bus lines.
All festival events are free of charge.
