The neighborhood festival of the Mostacciano community, blending liturgy, games, and conviviality.
The Santa Maria del Carmelo Parish Festival is the annual gathering of the Mostacciano community, a residential neighborhood in Municipio IX of the City of Rome, in the Lazio region, just minutes from the EUR and Torrino districts. The heart of the festival is Piazza Beata Vergine del Carmelo, where the churchyard and the oratory's sports fields are transformed for two days into a lively village square.
The community was founded in 1974, when Carmelite fathers Amedeo Verdirosi and Tommaso Pallicca began pastoral work in a neighborhood then under heavy construction. Following a visit by Cardinal Vicar Ugo Poletti in May 1978, a committee was formed for a new church; construction began in 1979, and the building opened for worship on December 8, 1984, on the tenth anniversary of its canonical establishment. On October 4, 1986, Cardinal Poletti himself consecrated and dedicated the church to Santa Maria del Carmelo. In 2024, the parish celebrated its fiftieth anniversary, and the community festival became the most visible highlight of that milestone.
The rhythm of the days alternates between religious and social dimensions, following a model that remains very much alive in Rome's neighborhood parishes. Recent editions have featured:
The dedication to the Blessed Virgin of Mount Carmel links the parish to a Marian devotion widespread in Southern Italy and Rome. Each year, the community celebrates the novena to the Virgin of Mount Carmel from July 7 to 15, culminating in the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel on July 16: a second, more intimate and liturgical event, distinct from the June community festival.
The festival has no tickets or pre-sales: access to the parish grounds is free, and any donations support the community's activities, starting with the Parish Caritas, which operates a weekly listening center and provides food support to neighborhood families. Visitors from outside the area will find a different side of Rome than the one on postcards: the Rome of neighborhoods built in the seventies and eighties, where parish life and local groups — such as the Mostacciano Neighborhood Association, which lists the festival in its calendar — remain the connective tissue of local life.
The most recent edition took place on June 20 and 21, 2026, with morning openings on both days. Dates vary from year to year: it is always best to check the parish website or its social media channels before traveling.
The 2026 festival of the Santa Maria del Carmelo Parish was held on June 20 and 21, 2026, in Mostacciano, in Rome's Municipio IX. The Mostacciano Neighborhood Association calendar indicated activities starting at 10:00 AM on Saturday, June 20, and 8:30 AM on Sunday, June 21, held in the usual parish spaces: the church, the churchyard, and the oratory's sports fields.
A parish source also mentioned a date in May 2026 related to a specific celebration: the two indications likely refer to distinct moments in the community's life. The detailed hour-by-hour program of the festival was not released online; as in previous years, the structure remained that of a neighborhood festival with community mass, games for children and teenagers, a shared dinner, music, and stalls.
