The patronal feast of the Miracoli district, blending Marian devotion and Neapolitan song
The Santa Maria dei Miracoli Festival is one of the patronal feasts that light up the historic districts of Naples, the capital of Campania, every summer. It takes place in Largo Miracoli, the square that opens up behind Via Foria at the foot of the Capodimonte hill, in the Miracoli district, which takes its name from the church itself. This is not a manufactured tourist event; it is a grassroots celebration, born from the devotion of the residents and grown around a Marian cult that has been passed down for centuries.
The church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli was built in the 17th century on the northern edge of the ancient city walls and initially housed the Reformed Conventual Franciscans of San Lorenzo. From 1660, the complex passed to the Pio Monte della Misericordia, which funded the construction of a female monastery. Between 1662 and 1665, the major renovation project was entrusted to Francesco Antonio Picchiatti, assisted by Cosimo Fanzago and Domenico Tango, while the cloister bears the signature of Dionisio Lazzari; the facade was modernized in 1790 by Camillo Lionti.
The interior, with a Latin cross plan, a single nave, side chapels, a transept, and a rectangular apse, preserves frescoes by Giovanni Battista Beinaschi, paintings by Andrea Vaccaro and Luca Giordano, and wooden sculptures by Giuseppe Picano: a top-tier Baroque heritage, still little frequented by mainstream tourist circuits. After the Unification of Italy, the monastery was transformed into the Maria Clotilde di Savoia school, which is still in operation today.
The heart of the evening is the free concert in Largo Miracoli, held at 9:00 PM on a stage set up in front of the church. In 2026, the event featured Ciro Rigione, an interpreter of contemporary Neapolitan song; in 2025, it was Gianni Fiorellino. The religious dimension of the festival develops around the concert, with celebrations and moments of devotion curated by the parish, following the format—solemn masses, processions, concerts, and shows—that characterizes the entire city festival series.
The festival is part of the Patronal Feasts. Beato chi le vive calendar, promoted by the Department of Tourism and Productive Activities of the Municipality of Naples. Starting with twelve events and approximately 26,000 participants, the series reached its fourth edition in 2026 with 26 patronal feasts distributed from June 1st to October 17th across all city municipalities. The stated goal is to enhance the intangible Neapolitan heritage: the patron saints of the districts, devotional traditions, and popular music.
Those who arrive at the Miracoli district on this evening find something that is increasingly rare to see in Naples: a neighborhood square filled with families, chairs brought from home, stalls, and voices. It is a precious opportunity to understand how the city still experiences the patronal feast not as postcard folklore, but as an identity-defining appointment for the district. The urban context—Via Foria, the Borgo dei Vergini, and the Rione Sanità just a few steps away—also allows you to combine the evening with a visit to one of the most fascinating monumental systems in Campania.
The festival falls in the first half of July, and the date varies from year to year: Sunday, July 5th in 2026, and Sunday, July 20th in 2025. It is advisable to check the official calendar published every spring by the Municipality of Naples, as the order of the events in the series may change.
The fourth edition of the Patronal Feasts. Beato chi le vive series brought one of the most anticipated evenings of the neighborhood to Largo Miracoli on Sunday, July 5, 2026. At 9:00 PM, in front of the church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli, Ciro Rigione performed in a free-admission concert, preceded and accompanied by devotional moments curated by the parish.
The Miracoli event is one of the 26 scheduled in the 2026 calendar, promoted by the Department of Tourism and Productive Activities of the Municipality of Naples and organized from June 1st to October 17th in churches, squares, and streets of all municipalities. All events, as per the municipal program, are free of charge.
The event is part of the official program of the 4th edition of the "Beato chi le vive" Patronal Feasts of the Municipality of Naples (June 1 - October 17, 2026).
Largo Miracoli opens along Via Santa Maria dei Miracoli, a short distance from Via Foria. By subway: Line 1, Museo or Cavour stops, about a ten-minute walk away; Line 2, Piazza Cavour station. Numerous ANM bus lines run along Via Foria.
The Miracoli district is very congested, and finding parking on festival evenings is difficult: it is best to leave your car in a guarded parking lot in the Museo area and continue on foot.
Admission is free, and no reservation is required. It is recommended to arrive at least half an hour early to find a seat near the stage.
