The neighborhood festival in honor of Madonna Causa Nostrae Laetitiae, between Torre Gaia and Villaggio Breda

The Santa Maria Causa Nostrae Laetitiae Patronal Feast is the most anticipated event of the year for Villaggio Breda and the Torre Gaia area, in the Municipio VI of the Rome municipality, in Lazio. Every year, between mid and late September, the village streets light up with festive decorations and the square in front of the church transforms into the neighborhood's open-air living room: this is where generations of families have gathered for nearly twenty years, in a celebration that is simultaneously religious, culinary, and popular.
The Marian title Causa Nostrae Laetitiae โ "Cause of our joy" โ is one of the oldest appellations in the Lauretan Litany, and in Rome, it is particularly linked to this patch of the eastern suburbs. The parish was established on October 4, 1941, by decree of Cardinal Francesco Marchetti Selvaggiani; the church, designed by architect Tullio Rossi, was built between December 1939 and 1941 on land donated by the Breda company, which had recently opened its factory in the area. The workers' village that still bears that name grew around the factory, and the church in Piazza Siderea immediately became its landmark. Since 2023, the building has also been the seat of a titular church.
The religious heart of the festival remains unchanged over time. In the days leading up to the festivities, a preparation triduum is held, with the recitation of the Rosary and Holy Mass celebrated in rotation at various points throughout the parish territory: Parco Papillo, the Torre Gaia area, and finally the parish church of Villaggio Breda. It is a way to take prayer outside the walls and physically traverse the neighborhood, house by house.
The most solemn moment is the procession with the Marian icon, which on the final day travels through the village streets accompanied by the faithful and, traditionally, by a marching band. Upon returning to the church, a solemn Mass is celebrated, followed by greetings from the parish priest and thanks to the volunteers.
Alongside the celebrations, the square in front of the church hosts the more convivial side of the festival. In the afternoon, the charity raffle and workshops for children and adults open; in the early evening, the food stalls managed by parish volunteers light up, offering Roman cuisine and takeaway specialties. Following this, there is group dancing, performances by local dance schools, comedy shows, and concerts by light music and ballroom orchestras that animate the square until late at night.
In 2025, the festival reached its nineteenth edition, celebrated on Sunday, September 14: a milestone that speaks volumes about the continuity of a suburban neighborhood capable of gathering around its church every year. Like many Roman neighborhood festivals, it does not aspire to be a major tourist event: it thrives on volunteer work, home recipes, and neighborly relationships, and for this very reason, it provides an authentic image of the Rome that lies outside the Grande Raccordo Anulare.
For those visiting Rome who want to experience a dimension different from the historic center, the Villaggio Breda Patronal Feast is a simple and sincere occasion: the food is good, the prices are low, the welcome is like that of a small town, and the evening procession with the Marian icon along the illuminated streets remains an image that makes the trip to the Casilina area worthwhile.
At the moment, the parish of Santa Maria Causa Nostrae Laetitiae has not yet released the dates and program for the 2026 patronal feast of Villaggio Breda, in Rome. Based on previous editions, the event is expected during the month of September, with the usual combination of religious celebrations and popular festivities.
The poster with the detailed program is usually published a few weeks before the event, along with the times for the triduum, the procession, and the musical evenings in the church square. We recommend checking with the parish of Piazza Siderea before planning your visit.
